Jonathan is a private investigator in a decaying eastern European city, consumed by his work and his failing marriage. Approached one day by an elderly couple, he is presented with a faded photograph of their daughter, missing for nearly two decades. Troubled by the image of the little girl, who was the same age when she vanished as his own daughter is now – he is compelled to find her. But one night, soon after taking on the case, as he walks across the bridge spanning the river that divides the city, he encounters a young woman crouched at the foot of a stone angel – a woman who suddenly leaps into the icy water below. Without thinking, Jonathan plunges after her, and is soon drawn into her ghostly world of confusion, coincidence and intrigue, and the city he thought he knew turns strange and threatening. Haunting and deeply moving, The Drowned Detective is an intoxicating, atmospheric exploration of relationships, lies and betrayal – confirming Neil Jordon as a master storyteller and a vital literary voice.
There's a secret war on the streets of the city. Only a New York cop can win it. His claim to fame is finding guns on the bad guys, and Detective Second Grade Brian McKenna has just spotted the beard carrying a piece. What he doesn't know is that he's about to shoot his way into a war with a highly disciplined, well-armed enemy so treacherous, not even the NYPD knows they exist. Exiled from the bright lights of Manhattan for breaking one too many rules, pressured by his girlfriend to quit the job, this is McKenna's last chance to win back his reputation and make the coveted rank of Detective First Grade. But if his moves aren't swift and right, a new breed of criminal--who has found a leader in an exotically beautiful and ruthless woman--will own his city. From the savvy and experience of a cop who gave over 25 years of his life to the NYPD comes a stunning novel of undeniable authenticity and unrelenting suspense.

Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935) was an American poet and novelist. Green has been called "the mother of the detective novel". Her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, the prototype for Miss Marple. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Indeed, as journalist Kathy Hickman writes, Green "stamped the mystery genre with the distinctive features that would influence writers from Agatha Christie and Conan Doyle to contemporary authors of suspenseful "whodunits". She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing well plotted, legally accurate stories.

Being promoted to detective, I expected my schedule would become more chaotic. I live for adrenaline, so it was a perk that I was all for. When a large case ends up on my desk, I throw all my time at it. I finally get the break I’ve been waiting for, but it comes with a challenge of epic proportions that I’m not prepared for in the slightest. He’s a six foot something, pure muscle, and all attitude, eighteen-year-old, All-Star Quarterback who happens to still be a senior in high school. Despite my best efforts to keep things platonic and friendly, my attraction to him only grows. Xavier belongs to me. So, when his life implodes, I won’t let him fight the battle alone. He’s not the only one in a war, though. When I realize mine could touch him, all bets are off, and I do something I never thought I’d ever do. I hope I’ll survive long enough to make sure he comes out of this unscathed.
