In our universe, clusters of galaxies are the largest organised structures. Typically they comprise hundreds of galaxies moving through a region of space ten million light years in diameter. The volume between the galaxies is filled with gas having a temperature of 100 million degrees. This material is a strong source of cosmic X-rays. For the last 40 years astronomers have observed sources of intense X-ray radiation from beyond our Solar System. These have been associated with remarkable objects, such as neutron stars and black holes. Current satellite observatories have enabled us to extend the studies of these objects from the Milky Way and Magellanic Clouds to individual X-ray sources in other galaxies. At the same time, imaging facilities at gamma-rays and TeV energies have improved enormously, leading to many further discoveries within our own galaxy. This Symposium presents an overview of these new developments, covering detailed studies of individual sources within the Milky Way, global descriptions of X-ray source populations in other galaxies, and less resolved relatives at high redshift. The enormously powerful phenomena of starbursts are examined in this book. These spectacular star-forming events are seen on large scales in some galaxies, often triggered by galactic interactions. An intriguing implication of starburst research is that active galactic nuclei (AGN) may not be powered by accreting black holes. This thesis presents a study of the origin of an apparently extended X-ray emission associated with the Galactic ridge. The study was carried out with broadband spectra obtained from mapping observations in the Galactic bulge region conducted in 2005–2010 by the Suzaku space X-ray observatory. The spectra were analyzed with a newly constructed X-ray spectral model of an accreting white dwarf binary that is one of the proposed candidate stars for the origin of the Galactic ridge emission in the higher energy band. Fitting of the observed Galactic ridge spectra with the model showed that there is another spectral component that fills the gap between the observed X-ray flux and the component expected from the accreting white dwarf spectral model in the lower energy band. This additional soft spectral component was nicely explained by an X-ray spectral model of normal stars. The result, together with previously reported high-resolution imaging results, strongly supports the idea that the Galactic ridge X-ray emission is an assembly of dim, discrete X-ray point sources.
