Excerpt from The Private Devotions of Dr. Lancelot Andrewes, Vol. 2: Sometime Lord Bishop of Winchester The following pages are intended as a companion to Mr. Newman's beautiful translation of the first part of Bishop Andrewes' Devotions, which originally appeared in the Tracts for the Times, and has since been republished in a separate form. The Devotions now presented to the reader are much less finished than the other portion, and evidently were never arranged by the holy Bishop who compiled them. But it may be truly said of him, as it was of another, that the very dust of his writings is gold. I have made little alteration in the way of arrangement; and have only where absolutely necessary added a few words of paraphrase. Some repetitions from the morning and evening devotions will therefore be found; and some few passages are repeated twice.
