Excerpt from The Practice of Mechanical Drawing for Self-Instruction A draftsman should be familiar with the problems in this chapter, and should be able to construct them very accurately when necessary. In practice, they are seldom used; but unless he knows how to draw them with precision, he will not be apt to get them so nearly correct when drawing them approximately. Problems of this kind are about the best exercises for beginners in mechanical drawing. The desired results will not be obtained unless extremely 'fine, hair-like lines are drawn, and all centres and other points taken exactly on these lines. Therefore it is important to use very hard pencils sharpened to a needle or chisel point, and to avoid making holes in the paper with the compasses. Given and required lines should be drawn fine in ink, and construction lines drawn in pencil only; but, to distinguish them in these problems, given lines are heavy; required lines fine; and construction lines broken. Excerpt from A Course in Mechanical Drawing for Evening Schools and Self-Instruction This course in Mechanical Drawing is the result of a number of years' work with even ing classes, and has been evolved from a careful study of the needs of such classes. The course was originally issued in blue print form, with accompanying typewritten notes. In this form it has been in use at the Pratt Institute and other schools, and in Y. M. C. A. Classes, for the past four years. In a modified form it has appeared serially in The entire course has been carefully revised, and is now published in the more convenient form of a text-book. Excerpt from The Science and Art of Model and Object Drawing: A d104 Book for Schools and for Self-Instruction of Teachers and Art-Students in the Theory and Practice of Drawing From Objects The art-student, in progressing through the various branches of his study, is soon confronted with the necessity of making for himself original drawings from objects. He can not long follow copies, and depend upon them for guidance he must read forms independently, as he would read a book; and he must give his own rendering of them. Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mechanical Drawing and Elementary Machine Design To properly prepare students for advanced machine design it has been found necessary to introduce a course designed to apply the principles of mechanical drawing to the solution of practical problems in machine construction and to familiarize the student with the arrangement and proportions of the most important machines and their details recognized by competent engineers to be the best practice of the present time. It is essential to intelligent study and an economical expenditure of time and labor that, before attempting to design a new machine or improve an old one, the student should post himself with all possible information concerning what has already been done in the same direction. To this end the present work has been prepared. In it we have attempted to show what is the best United States practice in the design and construction of various machines and details of machines, using rules and formulae whenever feasible in working out practical problems. Excerpt from A Practical Course in Mechanical Drawing The subject is best taught with the use of models, instead of sketches and pictorial illustrations. A glance through the book Will convince the teacher that a set of models corresponding to the exercises can be easily procured. The result of the instruction will then be real instead of imaginary, since the student knows absolutely what his drawings represent, and need not rely on an untrained imagination.
