Let Lord Macaulay answer when he says that those "Persons who take no pride in the noble achievements of their ancestors, will never achieve anything worthy to be remembered with pride by their remote descendants." When an angry dispute arose in the House of Lords between a peer of noble lineage and one of a new creation, it is reported that Bishop Warburton made this remark, "That high birth was a thing which he never knew any one disparage, except those who had it not, and he never knew any one to make a boast of it who had anything else to be proud of." In the spirit of these passages, is it not a duty to aid in preserving any worthy memorials of one's ancestry and kindred? In this instance, the writer testifies, it has been a special and an absorbing pleasure. He was led to undertake this work by finding a manuscript of a relative highly esteemed, in which there were many interesting details gathered together some twenty-five years since. He thought a full record would be valuable as a matter of history and awaken interest in family groups now widely extended.
