Though Greece is traditionally seen as an agrarian society, cattle were essential to Greek communal life, through religious sacrifice and dietary consumption. Cattle were also pivotal in mythology: gods and heroes stole cattle, expected sacrifices of cattle, and punished those who failed to provide them. The Cattle of the Sun ranges over a wealth of sources, both textual and archaeological, to explore why these animals mattered to the Greeks, how they came to be a key element in Greek thought and behavior, and how the Greeks exploited the symbolic value of cattle as a way of structuring social and economic relations. Jeremy McInerney explains that cattle's importance began with domestication and pastoralism: cattle were nurtured, bred, killed, and eaten. Practically useful and symbolically potent, cattle became social capital to be exchanged, offered to the gods, or consumed collectively. This circulation of cattle wealth structured Greek society, since dedication to the gods, sacrifice, and feasting constituted the most basic institutions of Greek life. McInerney shows that cattle contributed to the growth of sanctuaries in the Greek city-states, as well as to changes in the economic practices of the Greeks, from the Iron Age through the classical period, as a monetized, market economy developed from an earlier economy of barter and exchange. Combining a broad theoretical approach with a careful reading of sources, The Cattle of the Sun illustrates the significant position that cattle held in the culture and experiences of the Greeks. Africa: What It Gave Me, What It Took from Me is a memoir of an extraordinary woman who, as a newlywed, travelled with her husband to German South West Africa, a colony situated just above South African on the Atlantic coast. Here they begin a farm in a quite remote area where they raise cattle, sheep, and goats and plant large gardens on the banks of the Omaruru River. They build a comfortable home and welcome their first child. As the von Eckenbrechers work hard to build, their farm natives, whose land has been appropriated by the colonial government, are planning a revolt against colonial rule. Insurrection begins and the von Eckenbrechers are in the midst of it all. As the rebellion strengthens, Frau von Eckenbrecher returns to Germany to wait out the insurrection. Her husband eventually returns as well. Frau von Eckenbrecher never feels completely at home again in Germany. The von Eckenbrechers divorce and Frau von Eckenbrecher returns to South West Africa with her two sons. Her former husband emigrates to Paraguay. Frau von Eckenbrecher eventually takes a position in a German language school in Windhoek, the capital city, and rears her two sons there. In her book she chronicles colonial life, the natives of the colony, how the Spanish Influenza pandemic raged in Namibia, World War I in Africa, German surrender, and the South African occupation of German South West Africa and the eventual ceding of the colony to South Africa. The editors bring the memoir to a close with an update of Frau von Eckenbrecher’s later life and death, and a short remembrance from one of her two grandsons.
This book discusses tourism development in Namibia. It consists of 12 major chapters. Chapter 2 explores the opportunities and challenges of implementing a national tourism policy in Namibia, as perceived by tourism entrepreneurs. Chapter 3 presents the South African experiences for local economic development (LED) in rural route tourism, also a potentially strategic tool for development through tourism in the rest of Southern Africa. Chapter 4 discusses the modernization approach to tourism development, both in theory and practice. Chapter 5 discusses their commoditization in the Namibian tourism promotion, thereby defining their symbolic role in Namibian tourism development policies. Chapter 6 evaluates the applicability of the strategic objectives and government policy in regard to community-based catering services among the Hananwa. Chapter 7 analyses the effectiveness of tourism development in the simultaneous achievement of successful nature conservation and better means of subsistence in the Okavango Delta. Chapter 8 analyses the resources and restraints of coastal bird tourism in Namibia. Chapter 9 explores the awareness and responses of the Southern African tourism sector to control HIV/AIDS, and the perceptions on the effects of the disease on its operational environment. The process of mutual learning is, however, a complicated one and has a number of critical points, as described in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 elaborates on the applicability of information and communication technology (ICT) for school-based tourism marketing in Namibia, based on experiences and studies in his former home region, the eastern Caprivi Strip. Chapter 12 discuss the possibilities for communities in or close to the park to benefit from its existence, focusing on the partnerships between the Makuleke community, the park's management and the private sector, and on a comparative situation on the Mozambican side in the former Coutada Sixteen National Park. Chapter 13 discusses some of the lessons learned from the Southern African case studies are brought together to outline the current issues of strategic tourism development, in terms of both academic research and applied work in the tourism sector.
