Excerpt from The Panegyrics of Father Segneri, of the Society of Jesus Both the intellectual and the moral lives of individual men depend, for their direction and character, for their type and tone, not only on what such men are by nature and within themselves, but on their surroundings, and on influences which affect them from without. Antecedent circumstances, such as early training and associations, present circumstances of society, occupation, and the like, leave their impress upon the soul, and have their share in making the intellectual and the moral life of a man to be what it is. This must be so, necessarily, and from the very nature and constitution of man's spiritual being. The ideas which he conceives are suggested to him in great measure from without, and therefore depend for their character upon the external circumstances of time and place, of persons and things. He is in contact with them, and he cannot escape their influence. They affect him insensibly, and, not seldom, all the more because he is unconscious of the power of their presence. The ideas which he conceives are stored in his memory, and become the food of his mind. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.
