Excerpt from The Ontario High School Laboratory Manual: In Physics This Laboratory Manual has been prepared to accompany the Ontario High School Physics. As will be seen, it contains a large number of exercises. A considerable number arc qualitative, being intended to introduce new ideas and impress fundamental principles; but the majority are quantitative, and arc intended to lead to methods of accurate measurement of physical quantities of various kinds. By making the number of exercises large and giving alternative methods for performing some of the experiments, schools whose supply of apparatus is not large will be able to choose a satisfactory course suitable to their equipment. In many cases the apparatus required is so simple that it can be constructed by the teacher or by the senior students. Nothing can be more interesting or advantageous to the ingenious student than to construct his own apparatus, and wherever possible this should he encouraged; the necessary apparatus, moreover, is of an inexpensive nature and can now be readily obtained in the Province. The portion printed in large type( 1 for example) is intended to cover the course in Physics at present prescribed for the classes of the Middle School. The sections in smaller type( 24 for example) have been included in order to render the treatment of the subject more complete. In dealing with the various branches of the subject an attempt has been made to illustrate its principles and laws by reference to numerous applications in ordinary life. Other illustrations are taken from the chief applications of Physics to industry and commerce, especially those to be seen in our own country. Practical questions and problems are proposed in connection with important topics in the text. The materials for these exercises have been selected with the purpose, not only of illustrating and applying the principles discussed, but also of stimulating the interest of the student in the physical phenomena with which he is familiar. Attention is directed to the diagrams and other drawings, of which there is an exceptionally large number.
