Andrew Plaks reinterprets the great texts of Chinese fiction known as the "Four Masterworks of the Ming Novel" (ssu ta ch'i-shu). China's seaborne trade in the early modern period consisted of three sectors: government trade, tribute trade, and private trade. The first two were particularly active in the early 15th century, whereas private sea trade, both legal and illegal, was more dominant in later periods. The articles in the first part of this book mainly feature the early 15th century. They discuss structural issues and also deal with Cheng Ho's voyages into the Indian Ocean and the later accounts of this. The next part surveys the period dominated by private trade, with comparisons between the Chinese and the Portuguese trading systems. Part 3 discusses views of the 'Other', in this case Chinese views of maritime Asia. This involves detailed investigations of ethnographic accounts and shows that much work hitherto taken at face value by historians, should be reinvestigated in the light of sino-centric ideas and traditional Chinese rhetoric.
This new volume, Children’s Literature from Asia in Today’s Classrooms: Towards Culturally Authentic Interpretations, aims to provide readers with interpretation guides and practical ideas when they endeavor to make use of Asian international children’s literature in the classroom. It attempts to help readers interpret stories from Asia more authentically, and focuses both on international children’s literature and also on international literature read by young adults. In an increasingly interconnected world, understanding Asian international children’s literature and effectively using it are worthy goals for PK-16 classrooms and teacher education programs. The book is divided into two parts. Part I discusses how to authentically read children’s literature from four countries: India, Thailand, China, and Japan. These chapters provide guides for meaningful interpretations of cultural aspects of children’s stories from these countries. Part II consists of annotated bibliographies of international children’s literature from selected Asian societies: China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, and Thailand. The editors believe that readers will find each author’s cultural insights fascinating and useful as they attempt to read with cultural authenticity.
Fictions of Enlightenment is the first book to examine the fascinating and intricate relationship between Buddhism and the development of Chinese vernacular fiction. Qiancheng Li brings Buddhist models to bear on the vision, structure, and narrative form of three classics of late imperial literature—Journey to the West, Tower of Myriad Mirrors, and Dream of the Red Chamber—arguing that by fashioning their plots after the narratives of certain Mahāyāna sutras, the novelists transformed Buddhist concepts into narrative structures. Within the traditional Chinese novel Li even defines a new genre: the fiction of enlightenment.
