This unique book analyzes the discourse of organizations affiliated with al-Qaeda. It interrogates the discourse of these extremist organizations, which publish their own newspapers. These publications, widely distributed to the local population, play a critical role in securing and maintaining public support for the militant organizations. The book examines how these organizations discursively construct the socio-political reality of their world, in the process defining the Self and the Other. The Self becomes umma, or the global Muslim community, while the Other becomes the West, including the United States, Israel, and India. This book presents an analysis of three historical moments—the assassination of al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden, the controversial YouTube video Innocence of the Muslims, and the shooting of the Pakistani child activist and Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai. This analysis reveals the discursive strategies used by the militant organizations to create what Foucault calls regimes of truth and articulate identities of the Self and the Other. The first of its kind, this book provides an insight into the mind-set of extremists. It presents a picture of the world that extremists construct through their own discourse and explains how extremists try to win the hearts and minds of mainstream Muslims in order to expand their support base, seek donations, and find new recruits. Understanding extremist narratives and the ways they feed the broader militant discourse may yield more meaningful and effective strategies for the West to communicate with mainstream Muslims.

Maajid Nawaz spent his teenage years listening to American hip-hop and learning about the radical Islamist movement spreading throughout Europe and Asia in the 1980s and 90s. At 16, he was already a ranking member in Hizb ut-Tahrir, a London-based Islamist group. He quickly rose through the ranks to become a top recruiter, a charismatic spokesman for the cause of uniting Islam’s political power across the world. Nawaz was setting up satellite groups in Pakistan, Denmark, and Egypt when he was rounded up in the aftermath of 9/11 along with many other radical Muslims. He was sent to an Egyptian prison where he was, fortuitously, jailed along with the assassins of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. The 20 years in prison had changed the assassins’ views on Islam and violence; Maajid went into prison preaching to them about the Islamist cause, but the lessons ended up going the other way. He came out of prison four years later completely changed, convinced that his entire belief system had been wrong, and determined to do something about it. He met with activists and heads of state, built a network, and started a foundation, Quilliam, funded by the British government, to combat the rising Islamist tide in Europe and elsewhere, using his intimate knowledge of recruitment tactics in order to reverse extremism and persuade Muslims that the ‘narrative’ used to recruit them (that the West is evil and the cause of all of Muslim suffering), is false. Radical, first published in the UK, is a fascinating and important look into one man's journey out of extremism and into something else entirely. This U.S. edition contains a "Preface for US readers" and a new, updated epilogue.

This book provides a critical and a conceptual analysis of radical Islamist rhetoric drawn from temporally and contextually varied Islamist extremist groups, challenging the popular understanding of Islamist extremism as a product of a ‘clash-of-civilizations’. Arguing that the essence of Islamist extremism can only be accurately understood by drawing a distinction between the radical Islamist explanations and justifications of violence, the author posits that despite the radical Islamist contextualization of violence within Islamic religious tenets, there is nothing conceptually or distinctly Islamic about Islamist extremism. She engages in a critical analysis of the nature of reason in radical Islamist rhetoric, asserting that the radical Islamist explanations of violence are conceptually reasoned in terms of existential Hegelian struggles for recognition (as fundamentally struggles against oppression), and the radical Islamist justifications of violence are conceptually reasoned in terms of moral consequentialism. With a detailed analysis of Islamist extremist discourse spanning a wide range of contexts, this book has a broad relevance for scholars and students working in the field of Islamic studies, religious violence, philosophy and political theory.

The idea that the expression of radical beliefs is a predictor to future acts of political violence has been a central tenet of counter-extremism over the last two decades. Not only has this imposed a duty upon doctors, lecturers and teachers to inform on the radical beliefs of their patients and students but, as this book argues, it is also a fundamentally flawed concept. Informed by his own experience with the UK's Prevent programme while teaching in a Muslim community, Rob Faure Walker explores the linguistic emergence of 'extremism' in political discourse and the potentially damaging generative effect of this language. Taking a new approach which combines critical discourse analysis with critical realism, this book shows how the fear of being labelled as an 'extremist' has resulted in counter-terrorism strategies which actually undermine moderating mechanisms in a democracy. Since 9/11, the United States and its allies have been militarily engaged in a global "war on terror." Parallel to the physical war, there is a discursive struggle between the West and Muslim extremists. Both seek to win the hearts and minds of the mainstream Muslims by discursively legitimizing their own actions and de-legitimizing those of the other. Pakistan, a designated frontline ally in the "war on terror," is home to a number of militant organizations and religio-political parties that support al-Qaeda and the Taliban in their fight against the NATO forces inside Afghanistan. This study interrogates the discourse of these organizations/parties, which publish their own newspapers in Urdu language. These publications are widely distributed to the local Pakistani population. They play a critical role in securing and maintaining public support for the militant organizations. This dissertation examines how these organizations discursively construct sociopolitical reality of the world, and define the Self and the Other. This study employs Laclau and Mouffe's (1985) discourse theory to analyze three historical moments: 1) assassination of al-Qaeda chief Osama Bin Laden (May 2, 2011); 2) the controversial YouTube video Innocence of the Muslims (September 2012); and 3) the shooting of the Pakistani child activist Malala Yousafzai (October 9, 2012). The analysis reveals the discursive strategies used by the militant organizations to create what Foucault (1980) calls regimes of truth and articulate identities of the Self and the Other. The significant findings of the study include the following. The militant discourse disarticulates Muslim leaders from the umma, rendering the rulers and state institutions as unrepresentative. Moreover, the discourse casts these governments and political elites as the "near enemy," allied to the "far enemy." i.e. the West, particularly the United States. This discourse constructs the social reality that Muslims are in a 'state of siege,' facing an existential threat from the West. This construction of a sociopolitical reality has material consequences as violence against the Other becomes the only and justified means to escape the state of siege and ensure survival. Understanding of the extremist narratives and the ways they feed the broader militant discourse may yield more meaningful and effective strategies for the West to communicate with the mainstream Muslims. Future research in the field of audience reception is required to explore the diverse ways in which the readers decode the text of militant publications. Such a research will also throw light on the effectiveness of the communication system of the militant organizations in expanding their support base.
This collection highlights multidisciplinary approaches toward better understanding the discourses of extremism, exploring the ways in which insights from linguistics and other disciplines might inform each other in enacting meaningful reforms in policy, social media, and education. The volume is divided into three sections, bridging different disciplinary perspectives in examining different dimensions of the language of extremism in case studies from around the world. The first section features contributions on extremist language from a political lens, such as in election campaigns and media discourse. The second section looks at religious extremism and language used for the purposes of jihadist radicalisation and recruitment.
