Excerpt from The Mount Vernon Arithmetic, Vol. 2: Vulgar and Decimal Fractions The explanations under each process, it will be observed, are not addressed to the pupil, but to the teacher - the method of instruo tion being for the latter to explain fully to the class, while they are together, the principles involved in the operation which constitutes the lesson of the day. In practice, the teacher may adopt either of the two following plans, viz.: He may read over the directions himself, before coming to the class, and then, laying the book aside, explain to the pupils assembled before him the process in question, in the manner indicated - or he may have these directions read aloud in the class by the pupils themselves - explaining each step minutely himself as the reading proceeds. The essential point is that the explanations contained in the directions should be brought fully and distinctly before the mind of every pupil, before be under takes to perform the examples. It is of great importance to encourage the pupils to execute the work upon the slates at all times with great neatness and care. This will not only render the teacher's labor in revising the work more easy and agreeable, but will also train the pupils to habits which will be of incalculable advantage to them, as men of busi ness, in future life. The slates should be inspected, therefore. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
