Experience and research are clear: when pastors are criticized, attacked, and betrayed, they become confused, frustrated, and at times angry, and consequently, they experience acute pain--often causing deep wounds. Often not sure what to do, some quit their ministry, while others leave it altogether. But most serve for the long haul. Starting out in ministry, the vast majority of pastors have no clue about the conflict they will encounter, nor how to effectively deal with it. But pastors want answers....and Moses provides that solution. How Moses responded to the conflict he faced when leading Israel in the wilderness revealed a unique and comprehensive arrangement of leadership principles. The principles lay a solid foundation for this Pastor-Directed Model to equip pastors to successfully address conflict in a way that brings glory to God. Based on Moses' example, this model is founded on seven essential priorities that every pastor should practice at all times, in order to carry out four simple, yet practical steps to address conflict successfully. This comprehensive approach will glorify God and resolve conflict, bringing peace to people's lives and churches. Endorsements . . . Pastor and Professor is one pastor's story of a rich life filled with experiences that tested his faith and demanded growth that was both exhilarating and painful. It is the personal story of moving from faith as right doctrinal belief to faith as a liberating response to a loving God--a God who is always with us, continually drawing us into the future. This dynamic understanding of faith is based on the belief that the kingdom of God is a present reality where followers of Jesus are to be pastoral in spirit while prophetic in living. Don Blosser weaves personal experience with public expression of an emerging faith that wrestles candidly with the realities of life and deals with the pastor/professor tension of integrating academic scholarship in the classroom with pastoral proclamation in the pulpit. Pastor and Professor invites the reader to share a journey where faith is often challenged, sometimes doubted, yet lived with enthusiasm as it is shared from the pulpit and in the college classroom. It invites the reader to find fresh insights in the Scriptures, and to live with new hope, to embrace life more fully, and to share more gently one's own story with others.
Robert R. McLaughlin is the pastor of Grace Bible Church in Somerset, Massachusetts and the President of Robert McLaughlin Bible Ministries. Both ministries are non-denominational grace ministries dedicated to teaching the Word of God from the original languages and making it available at no charge throughout the world. For over 30 years Pastor McLaughlin has taught from the original languages of scripture, The Ministry is dedicated to equipping the believers in the Lord Jesus Christ to live the life that the Lord has designed for them. This is a life of contentment and strength as we go through the inevitable problems and challenges that life brings. Like it or not, believe it or not, we are all a part of an Angelic Conflict. One can hardly live in today’s society and not come across the concept of good versus evil. Books, movies, video games, news, it is found everywhere. It is actually a measure of Satan’s genius that he uses all of these things to disguise, obscure, and pervert the truth. This book explains why most people, including many Christians, are unable to associate the events of their lives with the big picture, the Angelic Conflict itself. The Bible teaches that before the creation of man, a conflict arose between God and His angels, when Satan attempted to ascend to the Mount of Heaven and wrestle God’s ruler-ship away from Him. The resulting battle left the surface of the earth in ruins, at this point the earth was packed in ice. Presumably it was at this time that the trial occurred in which Satan and the angels that followed him were found guilty and sentenced to the Lake of Fire. Since Satan is obviously not yet in the Lake of Fire, the logical conclusion is that he appealed his sentence. We can speculate a number of grounds on which he is making this appeal. One is an accusation against God’s character that we hear often enough in life: How can a loving God cast His creatures into hell? To answer this appeal, God created man, a lower being, and set him in the great stadium of earth for all the angels to observe. God would take on the form of this lower being Himself. He would allow sinful man to abuse and mock Him, and finally to nail Him to a Roman Cross in an attempt to destroy Him. Our Lord Jesus Christ would then bear the penalty for the sins of all mankind. By doing so He neutralized the claims His justice had against us, so that we could live with Him and fellowship with Him forever. This book unlocks the secrets of the Angelic Conflict!
In this new volume, prolific scholar Walter Brueggemann seeks to show Christian preachers how to consider the faith witnessed in several Old Testament traditions and to help them discover rich and suggestive connections to our contemporary faith challenges. The author also assumes that a wholesale sustained engagement with the Old Testament is worth the effort for the preacher. He recognizes what he calls the "sorry state" of Old Testament texts in the Revised Common Lectionary, which he claims often constitute a major disservice for the church and its preachers. The lectionary gerrymanders the Old Testament to make it serve other claims, most of the time not allowing it to have its own evangelical say. Brueggemann hopes that his exposition in this volume will evoke and energize fresh homiletical attention to the Old Testament, precisely because he believes the urgent work of the gospel in our society requires attentive listening to these ancient voices of bold insistent faith.
