Not illustrated. 1817 edition. Excerpt: ... 507 THE RESURRECTION AND ASCENSION OF JESUS CHRIST. Matt- xxviii. 1 to the end. Mark xvi. 1 to the end. Luke xxiv. 1 to the end. John xx. xxi. throughout. The particular circumstances recorded in the evangelical history relative to these two grand events, like those connected with the resurrec, tiori of Lazarus, in the preceding miracle, are so numerous and so important, that it would require volume to give an explanation of each distinctly. It is therefore thought proper, as in the foregoing miracle, to make a selection of the more distinguished parts, which enter into the composition -of the above histories, and it is hoped that a satisfactory explanation of them will be found in the following questions and answers. Q. Are you quite correct, when you rank the resurrection and ascension of the Blessed Jesus under the class of miracles which He wrought? A. Yes; for no one can doubt but that each of those events required a supernatural agency S o for its accomplishment, consequently that it was miraculous f and it is alike evident that each event was wrought by Jesus Christ Himself, and not by any other being, since He Himself declares concerning His resurrection, 1 lay down my life that I might take it again. No man tuketh it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again, (John x. 17,18;) and again, Destroy this temple, and in three days 1 will raise it up. But lie spake ef the temple of His body, (John ii. 19,21.) It is manifest, therefore, from these words, that the Blessed Jesus rose again from the dead by His own divine energy, or by virtue of the Divinity within Himself, and not only so, but that of Himself He laid down His life, and that consequently the Jews had no power...

The keystone of Christianity is Jesus’s physical, bodily resurrection. Present-day scholars can be significantly challenged as they forage through voluminous documents on the resurrection of Jesus. The literature measures well over seven thousand sources in English-language books alone. This makes finding specific sources that are most relevant for specific scholarly purposes an arduous task. Even when a specific book is relevant, finding the parts of the book that are most relevant to the resurrection rather than other topics often requires additional effort. A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus’s Resurrection addresses these challenges in several ways. First, the bibliography organizes more than seven thousand English sources into twelve main categories and then thirty-four subcategories, which are designed to help you find the most relevant literature quickly and efficiently. Embedded are pro and con arguments which support efficient access through brief annotations and then annotate the diversity and complexity of the field of religion by including sources that represent a diverse range of views: theistic (e.g., Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc.), agnostic, and nontheistic. The objective of this bibliography is to provide convenient access to relevant sources from a variety of perspectives, allowing you to browse or find the one source accurately and with ease.
