Excerpt from The Midshipmen's Trip to Jerusalem, and Cruise in Syria: Or the Adventures of a Cavalcade of British Naval Officers in the Holy Land I feel I need offer no apology in presenting you with the following pages, although I am fully aware their humble pretensions would cut a very poor figure under the pen of a Reviewer. However I can trust to you to remember, when criticising my book, that my only excuse for the many delinquencies to be found in it, is in the simple fact of its having been somewhat hurriedly written during our rather lengthy voyage fiom Syria to England. It will easily be understood how little suited is a Man-of-war for any attempt at authorship (to which of course I cannot pretend), as a quiet spot can scarcely ever be found, especially in my situation, without a cabin to retire to where I could obtain the solitude absolutely necessary for my under taking. Early in the morning and late at night were the only quiet half-hours free of interruption, although of course I was able to snatch other periods when not.
