2003 printing. Marines must have the versatility, flexibility, and skills to deal with any situation at any level of intensity across the entire range of military operations. Whenever the situation warrants the application of deadly force, a Marine must be able to deliver well-aimed shots to eliminate the threat. A Marine who is proficient in pistol marksmanship handles this challenge without escalating the level of violence or causing unnecessary collateral damage. It is not enough to simply provide Marines with the best available firearms; we must also ensure that their training prepares them to deliver accurate fire against the enemy under the most adverse conditions without hesitancy, fear, or uncertainty of action. A well-trained Marine is confident that he can protect himself, accomplish the mission, and protect his fellow Marines. To be combat ready, a Marine must be skilled in the tactics, techniques, and procedures of pistol marksmanship and diligent in the proper care and maintenance of the M9, 9-mm service pistol. Marine Corps Reference Publication (MCRP) 3-01B, Pistol Marksmanship, is the Marine Corps' source document for pistol marksmanship and provides the doctrinal basis for Marine Corps pistol marksmanship training. This publication provides all Marines armed with a pistol with the tactics, techniques, and procedures for range and field firing the M9, 9-mm service pistol.
Rifle Marksmanship, the official U.S. Marines reference publication 3-01A, is the complete guide to becoming proficient on the Corps' service rifles: the M16A4 and the M4 carbine. In addition to marksmanship techniques, the manual covers component parts, ammunition; cleaning, servicing and maintenance; operation and safety; firing positions; and engagement and low-light techniques. Illustrated throughout with clear and detailed photographs and drawings, Rifle Marksmanship will be of value to anyone interested in becoming a better rifle marksman, regardless of gun fired. From the Foreword: Marine Corps Reference Publication 3-01A, Rifle Marksmanship, presents how the Service rifle/carbine is employed by the individual Marine, contains the skills and techniques required for individual rifle marksmanship, and provides the skills that are required for basic through advanced marksmanship. This publication is intended to be used as a reference guide concerning marksmanship skills for unit commanders, trainers, and individual Marines. It presents marksmanship techniques organized by topic, and within each of those topics, techniques are broken down further as they apply to employment with the rifle combat optic (the primary sighting system) and with backup iron sights.

Excerpt from United States Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol Marksmanship Training, 1935: Part 1. Rifle Marksmanship; Part 2. Pistol Marksmanship; Part 3. Schedules 1. The purpose of this manual is twofold: First, to present the subject of marksmanship training in such a manner as will be of the most assistance to the inexperienced officer who, through force of circumstances, will have to supervise and carry out the entire training of his company or detachment; second, and to standardize the system of instruction and training for the Marine Corps. INTRODUCTION 1. GAIN ATTENTION. Marksmanship proficiency is the cornerstone of a Marine’s effectiveness in any combat situation. The goal of marksmanship training is to develop this proficiency to a combat- effective level. Marine Corps policy requires that all Marines be thoroughly trained and capable of safely and effectively employing those weapons appropriate to their grade and duty assignment. To this end, the Marine Corps Combat Pistol Program (CPP) functions to provide marksmanship training to those Marines who are required by T/O, grade, or duty assignment to carry the M9 service pistol. Through classroom, dry practice, and live fire training, the CPP prepares Marines to be combat-effective with the pistol in support of their unit’s mission. 2. OVERVIEW. This lesson will introduce Marine Corps pistol marksmanship training with the M9 service pistol. 3. INTRODUCE LEARNING OBJECTIVES. This lesson is provided as an introduction to the Marine Corps CPP. There are no Terminal or Enabling Learning Objectives for this lesson. 4. METHOD. This lesson will be taught in a classroom setting using lecture. 5. EVALUATION. The Marine will not be tested on the material in this lesson. TRANSITION: The intent of the CPP is to provide classroom, dry practice, and live fire training on basic and combat pistol marksmanship skills. Systematically, the emphasis of the training program shifts from fundamental to combat applications with skills gradually refined until Marines are at a combat ready level.
