The water sector has long been identified as ripe for private sector investment. Prolonged neglect by the public sector has resulted in an urgent need for significant commitment of finance and management resources. International and non-governmental organisations have identified water as the next industry to experience substantial global expansion, with concomitant business opportunities. However, the development of private involvement in this sector has been slow; only recently has this state of affairs shown signs of improvement. The water sector provides an essential service and manages a vulnerable and valuable resource. Private sector involvement must therefore follow the principle of sustainable development, to combine the forces of economic growth with responsible resource management, equitable distribution of benefits and protection of people and the environment. This book provides a commercial, contractual and legal view of water projects on an international scale. It is a practical guide for use by public sector authorities considering private sector involvement, private sector investors considering entering or expanding in the water sector and lenders or investors interested in financing such projects. The context of this book is international, therefore it does not focus on any particular legal system, but rather legal concepts which will apply to most jurisdictions.
Around the world, a new architectural form is emerging. In public places a progressive architecture is being commissioned to promote open-ended, undetermined, lightly programmed or un-programmed interactions between people. This new phenomenon of architectural form – Pavilions, Pop-Ups and Parasols – is presaged by rapidly changing social relationships flowing from social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The nexus between real and virtual meeting is effectively being reinvented by innovative and creative architectural practices. People meet in new and responsive ways, architects meet their clients in new forums, knowledge is ‘met’ and achieved in new and interactive frameworks. It contrasts bluntly with the commercially structured interactions of shopping malls and the increasingly deliberate interactions available in cultural institutions. "The Maribor Project took place in the European Capital of Culture 2012 at the invitation of Umetnostna galerija Maribor (UGM) and Maribor Capital of Culture 2012 office. The focus of the project was an exhibition by Rebecca Horn. In her turn, she invited fellow visual artists Matthias Deumlich, Ali Kaaf, Antonio Paucar, Jacob Schaible, and Markus Wüste to participate in an artistic dialogue at UGM. Poetry readings by Rod Mengham, Tomaž Šalamun, Joachim Sartorius, and Yang Lian, a roundtable discussion with Rebecca Horn and Aleš Šteger, a concert given by Hayden Chisholm, and a film presentation were all important elements in the event".
This book seeks to enhance understanding of the impacts of project setup and its implementation environment on project performance by leveraging information from the study of a rich set of European transport infrastructure project cases. It puts forward a system’s view of project delivery and aims to serve as a strategic tool for decision makers and practitioners. The proposed approach is not limited to specific stakeholder views. On the contrary, it allows stakeholders to formulate their own strategies based on an holistic set of potential implementation scenarios.
