My urge to travel and see as much of this world that I possible could, was matched by my thirst for knowledge. There was no preschool during my early years. So, I did not learn how to read until I was in the first grade. Immediately, reading became my favorite past-time. When other kids were playing ball and climbing trees, I would be sitting under a big oak tree with a book. By the time I reached high school, I had read every Shakespeare play and by the time I reached college, I had read every Russian and French novel that I could find - such was my thirst for knowledge. But it did not stop there: I became a perennial student, enrolled in an assortment of universities for a total of 33 years. Upon graduating from Hampton University, I went to NYC where I attended Columbia University, NYU, Hunter College, Adelphi University, and Fordham University. Other universities that I attended included the University of Connecticut, University of Chicago, Brandeis University and the Sorbonne in Paris. So, it is not surprising that I would gravitate toward a teaching career. Not only would I have a career that required copious reading, but it was a natural platform for the exchange of ideas. I was extremely fortunate to have been able to teach at such universities as New York University, University of Kansas, University of Chicago, The College of the Bahamas, St. Leo College, Pepperdine University, Florida International University, Wayne State University, Grambling University, and Barry University. When traveling around Europe during my formative years, I shared hotel accommodations with more than 30 individuals, none of whom I had known before. (We were young and were happy to find someone who needed to share expenses.) The combination of interactive travel and acquisition of knowledge has sustained me, and it will you. Try it!
This is the story of an extraordinarily unique individual - a scholar, teacher, essayist, renegade, and philosopher -who is not afraid to say "yes" to every adventure that comes his way. But, more than that, it is the story of modern-day Black America and how we got from Jim Crowism to here. Dr. Raiford is often called to represent our race when interacting with the "rich and famous". He consistently mentors underprivileged youth and is a strong advocate for social justice.Throughout the book you will find that Dr. Raiford makes no distinction between the rich and the poor; between the young and the old; and among races, religions, and persons with different sexual preferences. You will find that he easily endears himself to everyone wherever he goes and is most likely an "unforgettable character" with all who interact with him. This is a story that needs to be told and he has the ability to tell it in a most forthright manner - with lots of humor!
The Travels of Marco Polo is a 13th-century travelogue written down by Rustichello da Pisa from stories told by Italian explorer Marco Polo, describing Polo's travels through Asia between 1271 and 1295, and his experiences at the court of Kublai Khan. The Travels is divided into four books. Book One describes the lands of the Middle East and Central Asia that Marco encountered on his way to China. Book Two describes China and the court of Kublai Khan. Book Three describes some of the coastal regions of the East: Japan, India, Sri Lanka, South-East Asia, and the east coast of Africa. Book Four describes some of the then-recent wars among the Mongols and some of the regions of the far north, like Russia. Polo's writings included descriptions of cannibals and spice-growers.
