Thousands of years ago during the creation of Earth, ten teeth, extracted from ten special animals, are scattered to the far corners of the globe for people of worthy bloodlines to find. Each tooth grants the owner amazing power to protect, not harm. On June 14, 2019, the legacy finally begins. All thirteen-year-old Draken Jones wants to do is swim with the sharks at the Boston Aquarium. But when he scrapes his leg and accidentally falls into the water, a mako shark attacks him. He survives-barely. Now, as zombies begin invading the world and murder half his family, Draken and his mother are forced to flee to a Florida shelter. During their journey, Draken is attacked by a cryptic human shark, who orders Draken to kill him. After Draken reluctantly complies, he is gifted with a tooth that transforms him into a super human shark with powerful abilities. Now Draken must use his newfound powers to save the residents of the shelter from the evil zombies known as Consumers.
Said to be the fastest shark of all, the mako shark can cut through water at 40 miles per hour. Perhaps more impressive is the hang time achieved when the torpedo-shaped fish launches up to 20 feet above the surface of the water. This book explores all the stunts of the speedy mako shark.
Follow the fastest shark in the ocean as it hunts for swordfish.
Describes the characteristics, behavior, diet, and life cycle of mako sharks.
Mako sharks, shortfin mako and longfin mako, belong to the family Lamnidae, which also includes the great white shark. Makos have very ancient origins, appearing in prehistoric oceans between 40 and 60 million years ago. The elegant shape, the curved prominent teeth and the tail shaped like a halfmoon make them unmistakable. The shortfin mako can be considered among the fastest of all sharks, since it can reach speeds of 35-56 km/h and can jump out of the water to more than 6 meters in height. Makos have the speed and agility to catch fast swimming prey, such as tunas, swordfishes and dolphins. Some makos have been found with a swordfish bill driven into their body after fighting with prey. Makos are considered dangerous animals: attacks on divers, swimmers and boats are known, but are rare because these predators prefer offshore waters. The shortfin mako is fished all over the world and is prized for the high quality of its meat. Moreover its fighting temper makes it one of the most sought-after prey by the sport-fishermen.
Mako sharks use their powerful tails to speed after prey. Dive into the exciting world of mako sharks.
Two sharks, the ocean's most ferocious predators, try to resolve their differences by trading jokes and making each other laugh in this picture book about learning to get along with others. Mako is a hungry shark and wants everything for himself. Tiger is exactly the same way. These two competitive sharks are definitely not friends. But then a hook from above is dropped in the ocean and Tiger goes for the bait. Mako knows what he would want Tiger to do for him and rushes over to help. Is it possible that the two not-so-friendly sharks might become friends? Once they trade their favorite silly sayings, it looks like that just may happen. Entertaining storytelling pairs with expressive illustrations to create this fun picture book.
"I have spent most of my life in New Jersey, but the blood of a geisha courses through me yet." If Kiki Takehashi's life is dramatically different from that of her reserved Japanese-American mother, it is light-years away from that of her grandmother, whom she knows only through old family stories. Kiki has recently become engaged to Eric, a handsome, successful New York City lawyer. But at the same time she is haunted--quite literally--by the memory of her friend Phillip, killed the previous year in a mountaineering accident. Kiki has never met her grandmother Yukiko, for whom she is named. Still, thoroughly American though she is, she feels a secret kinship with her. Kiki is swept up by the story of this strong, proud, passionate woman who, against all odds, in a time and place far different from her own, was sold by her impoverished family, became a famous geisha, and found the love that has so far eluded the rest of the Takehashi women. Lyrical, haunting, and stunningly evocative, One Hundred and One Ways introduces a powerful and exciting new voice in contemporary fiction.
