This biography of Admiral Thomas C. Hart is important not only because it is the story of a man whose central guiding force in life was the U.S. Navy, but also because it is a study of some fifty-five significant years of American history. This book, based in part on the twenty-one volume Hart diary, investigates the forces and circumstances that shaped Hart’s actions during a memorable and influential career that spanned three wars and was followed by brief service in the U.S. Senate. James Leutze provides us with Hart’s firsthand account of the Lanikai-Isabel incident, the hazardous foray ordered by Roosevelt in 1941. Although, ostensibly, the purpose of the maneuver was to garner information on the movements of the Japanese fleet, Hart clearly considered that Roosevelt’s intention was to provoke the Japanese. In descriptive detail, James Leutze relates Hart’s war experiences, both professional and private, and examines his controversial relationships with other, equally strong-minded naval leaders. Particularly burdensome at times were Hart’s difficulties with the brilliant, but egotistical and quixotic, Douglas MacArthur. Hart’s role as commander of the naval forces of the American, British, Dutch, and Australian military command is carefully analyzed by Leutze. The ABDA never became effective, and, because of Allied jealousies and internal political pressures, Hart was eventually removed from his command. Leutze shows us, with compassion, a man given heavy responsibility, and then virtually ignored by his own government. Blunt, outspoken, aloof, and occasionally referred to as “Terrible Tommy,” Admiral Thomas C. Hart was nevertheless respected and admired, an inspiration to his fellow officers. This is the fifth volume of Dr. Justin Glenn’s comprehensive history that traces the “Presidential line” of the Washingtons. Volume One began with the immigrant John Washington, who settled in Westmoreland Co., Va., in 1657, married Anne Pope, and became the great-grandfather of President George Washington. It continued the record of their descendants for a total of seven generations. Volume Two highlighted notable family members in the next eight generations of John and Anne Washington’s descendants, including such luminaries as General George S. Patton, the author Shelby Foote, and the actor Lee Marvin. Volume Three traced the ancestry of the early Virginia members of this “Presidential Branch” back in time to the aristocracy and nobility of England and continental Europe. Volume Four resumed the family history where Volume One ended, and it contained Generation Eight of the immigrant John Washington’s descendants. Volume Five now presents Generation Nine, including more than 10,000 descendants. Future volumes will trace generations ten through fifteen, making a total of over 63,000 descendants. This transformation was not without its social cost, however, and black midshipmen bore the brunt of it. Blue & Gold and Black is the history of integration of African Americans into the Naval Academy. The book examines how civil rights advocates? demands for equal opportunity shaped the Naval Academy?s evolution. Author Robert J. Schneller Jr. analyzes how changes in the Academy?s policies and culture affected the lives of black midshipmen, as well as how black midshipmen effected change in the Academy?s policies and culture. BLURB Kenneth Whiting was well-known in the Navy of his day. During his early years after graduating from the Naval Academy, he commanded several early submarines and was known as the first man to escape from a downed submarine. After being trained to fly by Orville Wright, he was the first naval officer to conceptualize a ship that was to become the most important in the US Navy--the aircraft carrier. After submitting his first three unsuccessful proposals to build such a ship, his creativity and aggressiveness were recognized at the start of World War I when he was asked to lead the Navy's First Aeronautical Detachment to France. The FAD was the first American unit to travel to Europe, and within a few months, he negotiated a plan with the French Navy for a system to build naval air stations and train his men in anti-submarine warfare from the air. When the US Navy Department approved the plan, he was transferred to the command of NAS Killingholme on England's North Sea Coast. He built Killingholme into the largest naval air station in Britain. Returning to the US at the end of the war, he found the Navy Department much more willing to talk about building aircraft carriers. Upon the approval of this new ship type, he was placed in charge of converting or building the first six. Along the way, he developed the new systems for the operation of launching and landing aircraft on the new flat flight decks. For his developmental work with the first six carriers and commanding two of them, he is frequently called the Father of the Aircraft Carrier in books and publications about the ship, which was to take the place of the battleship as the king of the seas. Along the way, naval aviation took advantage of his ability to effectively and smoothly advocate for many of the then-fledgling naval aviation's important goals in the public arena. Because he had publicly spearheaded much of those goals, the battleship admirals who ran the Navy of that era were able to take revenge on him and prevent him from being promoted to admiral rank. His tragic death in the middle of World War II became part of the reason his name has been largely forgotten outside the Navy, but naval aviators know him because the field where they are all trained, Whiting Field NAS in Pensacola, is named for him. The military exploits of this American sailor are worth recounting, but the victories of Whiting and his family racing yachts on Long Island Sound make him even more interesting.
