Excerpt from The Letters of Horace Walpole, Fourth Earl of Orford, Vol. 15 of 16: Chronologically Arranged and Edited With Notes and Indices; With Portraits and Facsimiles; 1791-1797 I see with pleasure that the Convention and the J acobins have been breaking, though'perhaps patched together again for the present. It will break out again. The former are wofully uneasy. They complain of factions everywhere, though trying to conceal their disasters by boasting of Victories but they display their wants and their deficits lament the loss of their commerce and manufactures which themselves have destroyed. They tremble at the crowds in Paris, and wish to thin them; are sick of anarchy; but their efforts to disperse the former, and to lessen the latter, will disperse the dissatisfaction through the pro vinces, and augment the latter. It is plain they fear not being able to retain the capital in obedience; and if they fail there, who is to, govern the armies These grievances will, I think, produce a civil war, or some kind of counter revolution. So be it! Neither. Will settle the country soon, nor is it to be wished it should be. It will require time to amend Frenchmen or Frenchwomen, were the task possible. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Letters of Horace Walpole, Vol. 4 of 16: Fourth Earl of Orford; Chronologically Arranged and Edited With Notes and Indices Now are you mortally angry with me for triļ¬‚ing with you, and not telling you at once the particulars Of this almost-revolution. You may be-angry, but I shall take my own time, and shall give myself what airs I please both to you, my Lord Ambassador, and to you, my Lord Secretary of State, who will, I suppose, open this letter-ii you have courage enough left. In the first place, I assume all the impertinence of a prophet - ay, of that great curiosity, a prophet, who really prophesied before the event, and whose predictions have been accomplished. Have I, or have I not, announced to you the unexpected blows that would be given to the administration - come, I will lay aside my dignity, and satisfy your impatience. There's moderation.
