Excerpt from The Life and Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 4 Tm; writings of Burns - his Poems, Songs, and Letters - are most of them so expressly the coinage of his immediate experiences and feelings, that his life might be read in them alone. As hitherto arranged, each series might be likened to a fragmentary view of the Poet's life, supplementary to the meagre memoir usually prefixed. So arranged, the biographic effect of the whole is either imperfectly developed, or lost by dissipation. It occurred to me - and I find that the same idea had latterly occurred to Allan Cunningham - that if the various compositions were strung in strict chronological order upon the memoir, they might be made to render up the whole light which they are qualified to throw upon the history of the life and mental progress of Burns, at the same time that a new significancy was given to them by their being read in connection with the current of events and emotions which led to their production. Such is the plan here adopted, and the menlt is not merely a great amount of new biographical detail, but a new sense, efficacy, and feeling, in the writings of the Poet himself.' This quotation from the preface to the first edition of Dr Robert Chambers's Life and Works of Robert Burns fully explains the spirit in which that work was undertaken, and the plan in accordance with which it was carried out. The forty-five years that have passed since these words were written have signally proved their wisdom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Robert Burns and Mrs. Dunlop, Vol. 1 of 2: Correspondence Now Published in Full for the First Time Students of Burns will be interested, in the first place, to know what light the Lochryan mss. Throw on the cause of that unhappy episode in the poet's life. The point is fully discussed in the text (vol. Ii. P. 289, but it may be said generally that a broad view of the complete Correspondence, now possible for the first time, strongly favours the theory that Mrs. Dunlop's failure to answer Burns's letters of 1795 and 1796 was due to inadvertence rather than to any offence he could, consciously or unconsciously, have given her, and that if pique influenced her that is to say, if her silence was caused by his failure to answer promptly the last letter she sent him from London in January of 1795 - his previous negligence had afforded her at least a pretext for the severe punishment she inflicted. A glance at the table of dates (infra) will show which of the two had the better reason, on the whole, to reproach the other with neglect. Excerpt from The Poetry of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 Burns's verse falls naturally into two main divisions. One, and that the larger, appeals with persistency and force, on the strength of some broadly human qualities, to the world in general: for the reason that the world in general is rich in sentiment but lacks the literary sense. The other, being a notable and lasting contribution to literature, is the concern of comparatively few. The present Edition of Burns's verse is primarily addressed to the second of these two bodies of readers. Of necessity, however, it is as nearly complete as existing canons of taste will permit; and 'tis hoped that it will prosper, though for different reasons and on different grounds, with both sections of what, after all, is one, and that a world-wide, public. Excerpt from The Poetical Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 In these volumes the poetical works of Burns are presented in their due chronological sequence, the pieces following each other according to the dates of their composition - so far as ascertainable - so that the development of the poet's genius may be readily studied in connection with the facts of his life, as given in the biographical memoir contained in the first volume. As will be noticed, the year of the poet's age to which each poem belongs is inserted at the top of the page where the piece occurs. Numerous notes are appended to the author's text, giving the reader a vast amount of useful, and indeed indispensable, information in regard to the origin of the individual poems, and to persons, places, occurrences, local usages, &c., connected with or referred to by Burns. Without such a commentary many references and allusions would not be understood, nor would the several pieces possess anything like the same interest. A certain number of the notes are critical in their character - they may point out special beauties, or may indicate where the poet has been less happy in his efforts. These notes are chiefly selected from writers of eminence who have had Burns for their theme - such as, Scott, Wordsworth, Lockhart, Professor Wilson, Allan Cunnningham, and Carlyle, not to mention others. For the convenience of the reader, and to save him time and trouble, the distinctively Scottish words and expressions, such as occur especially in the best and most characteristic of Burns's poems, have their meanings made clear by marginal explanations accompanying each piece that requires such aid. To those unacquainted with the dialect that Burns often used this must prove a most valuable feature, as it will enable anyone readily to understand the meaning of even the most difficult passages, while the troublesome necessity of consulting a special glossary is entirely avoided. In the margin and opposite each line will be found the necessary interpretation, so that the reader carries the sense along with him as he reads, and only very rarely does a more detailed explanation require to be furnished in a footnote. But it may be pointed out that the difficulty of understanding Burns is apt to be exaggerated, and that many of his poems present few and trifling peculiarities of dialect and others none at all. The Sketch of the Poet's Life has been specially written for this edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Poems by Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 2: With an Account of His Life, and Miscellaneous Remarks on His Writings; Containing Also Many Poems and Letters, Not Printed in Doctor Currie's Edition Aware of the indispensible necessity of a Bio graphical Memoir of a Poet whose Life and Writings have, for the last 20 years, excited so uncommon a degree of interest throughout the most remote corners of the British Empire, and not having it in his power to avail himself of the labours of the amiable and judicious Dr Currie, Mr Morison, on commencing this publi cation, had applied to an acquaintance and ad mirer of the Bard, - to draw up a Sketch of the Life of his illustrious countryman. This gentle man, already not unknown in the literary world, agreed to the undertaking with much reluctance, and only at the repeated request of the Trustees of the late Publisher. Excerpt from Works of Robert Burns, Vol. 1 of 4: With His Life With something of hope and fear, I aj'er this work to my country. I have endeavoured to relate the checgueredfor tunes, delineate the character, and trace the Illustrious Peas ant with candor and accuracy his farming speculati - excise schemes - political feelings and poetic musings are discussed with a fulness not common to biography and his sharp lampoons and personal sallies are alluded to with all possible tenderness to the living and respect for the dead In writing the Poet's Life I have availed myself of his un published journals, private letters, manuscript verses, and of well-authenticated anecdotes and traits of character sup plied by his friends; and I have arranged his works as much as might be in the order of their composition, and ii lustrated them with such notes, critical, historical, and bio graphical, as seemed necessary. Of verse, one hundred and odd pieces will be found in this edition, more'than Cur rie's octavo contains. The number of letters, too, are ma terially increased - but nothing is admitted which bears not the true Burns' stamp. The embellishments are of high merit: the portrait of the Poet has called forth the commen dation of several who had the honor of his acquaintance.
