Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: May 4, 1933 There are a great many men and women, in fact, the great majority of all the people in the world, believe that Joseph Smith was a false prophet. When you contemplate the fact that this revelation was given a little over one hundred years ago, and that it is recognized as scientifically true to-day, after investiga tions have been made by great scientific minds, it is remarkable that a young man should be able to give something so marvel lous as this Word of Wisdom. So as a tribute to the prophet who gave it, who was and is and ever will be a prophet of the living God, I shall read it. All the disbelief of the world will never change that fact, because it is a fact. All the disbelief of the world cannot change the fact that this man was chosen of God and became the head of the Church of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. Disbelief does not change facts. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: December 21, 1933 No man can return to the Father except through the Son, for the name of Jesus Christ is the only name which shall be given under heaven, whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men. He has manifested Himself in person to His prophets in the present dispensation, and has spoken with them as one man speaks with another. He is known to be in the likeness of the Eternal Father - the express image of the Father's person - for both have been seen and heard in this the dispensation of consummation and fulness. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: May 11, 1933 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be delivered for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the Lord hath said, and in the remnant whom the Lord shall call. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: April 13, 1933 Not until the meridian of time, however, was the hope of man confirmed and even enlarged upon. At that time there came not only the promise of immortal existence, so far as the spirit is concerned, but existence in union with the body. The gladdest news that was ever announced to mortal ears, was that given by the angel, who, on that Easter morning, said to the women who came to embalm and further prepare the body of Christ: Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him 10, I have told you. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: May 18, 1933 I am keenly aware of, and deeply grateful for, the great honour the people have bestowed upon me. I am also aware that a re sponsibility equally great comes with that honour. May I say that just now I am thinking more about the responsibility than about the honour. Should any of you have hopes about my work in this high office to which I am called, I trust I shall not too much disappoint you. If any of you have misgivings, I can only say that your misgivings can hardly be greater than my own. I am keenly conscious of my own deficiencies. I come late in life to a new work. But whatever shall be the outcome of my humble service, what ever shall overtake me, there Shall be yet abiding with all of us eternal truth, which is light and life, even life everlasting. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: August 17, 1933 But that is not all it Shall be marked by eternal progression, advancement, achievement ever greater and greater, higher and higher. None who have experienced death have come directly to tell us about it, and what we know of eternal life we have learned from the One who hath power to grant it. It is a gift from God and it comes unto those who have reached God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 84: May 18, 1922 The next speaker was Elder George Albert Smith. He said Latter-day Saints should at all times be ready to respond to a call to speak the word of the Lord. If they will store up in their minds the truths that have been given, they will be pre pared to meet any emergency. Elder Smith referred to the addresses of the three educators who spoke at the opening session of conference. No good man, he said, can come under the influence of a gathering of Latter-day Saints and imbibe the spirit of the occasion and not say something good. He referred especially to the comment of Dr. Thomas Nixon Carver, who said, in effect, that if he were looking for an example of nation building he could find none better than that of the Mormons. In comment Elder Smith said he should like to add to Dr. Carver's observation that this is God's work: it is not a people going alone and accomplishing a great purpose. He referred to a speech made to Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, who said, in effect, that there will be no abatement of the world's evils until simple faith in God is restored. God's people, Elder Smith said, are trustees. Theirs is the responsibility of warning the nations of the earth. The wonld has turned away from God, peoples have heaped unto themselves idols. History repeats itself, said Elder Smith. God is warning the world through his servants as he warned it in the days of Noah. Noah preached repentance 120 years. In this dispensation thousands of Elders with the divine authority to sound a warning are lifting up their voices in all the world, calling to the honest in heart, Come out of Babylon, 0 ye my people. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only solution of the world's ills; it is God's plan for the salvation of his children, said Elder Smith. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: February 2, 1933 He was also sent to show men a God in action, revealing the Father's attitude toward all His children. He was further and primarily sent to die for the redemption of the world He had created, and for the redemption from the grave of all the hosts of men that had ever lived upon the earth, whose bodies now and in the future shall slumber in the tomb. He came to redeem them. By His own precious life, His sinless one, He secured redemption for mankind. He died voluntarily, for there was in Him immortality and He needed not to have died but there was also the ability to die, and by giving His sin less life, He satisfied death, and He acquired a value by which He has purchased the bodies of every man and woman that lives. He has in His hands the power to unlock the grave, as He did for Himself, and all shall arise and be rewarded according to the deeds done in the body. He organized His Church among men, and set before them the manner of life they ought to live to be perfect ladies and gentle men and prepared to go in to the presence of His Father, for the Gospel that He taught was not His, but His Father's who sent Him. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: January 26, 1933 I shall never forget the words of a young man whom I happened to meet, while visiting a conference in a neighbouring state, a young man who had not made the moral law the guiding principle Of his life. A high counsellor was absent from the Saturday meeting, and the excuse that the stake president gave for his absence was that the councilman had sat up with his nephew during the preceding evening. The impression that the president gave me was that the young man had imbibed too freely of boot leg whisky, and I will confess I had very little sympathy for him, for I condemn the man who drinks whisky almost more than I do the man who sells it. Both are lawbreakers and both will suffer the penalty of the violation Of social order and the moral law. However, I dismissed the matter from my mind until the next day, when a circumstance brought me in the presence of the unfortunate young man. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: September 7, 1933 From the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife and they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain, but osie flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let no man put asun er. The duty of parents to children who are born to them in wed lock is definitely defined. Parents are under obligation most solemn to instruct, train, and provide for their children. If they are indifferent or negligent and the children become evil or wicked, the parents are held responsible. Children are to honour their parents, obey them in righteous ness, and comply with their just demands. From the beginning, civil laws have existed which have made it obligatory upon those who entered into the bonds of matri mony to observe these sacred obligations of husband to wife, wife to husband, parents to children, and children to parents. The violations of these sacred obligations are made punishable offenses, and compliance with them is obligatory.
