Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: December 20, 1923 Love for God and for one another should be the Christmas theme. Such was the divine announcement by the heavenly host that first heralded the glad tidings of great joy! Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, good will toward men! How simple the words! How deep, how comprehensive their significance! At Christmas, we celebrate His birth in tose mission on earth (1) God is glorified (2) earth is promised peace; (3) all men given the assurance of God's good will toward them! Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 17, 1923 This is a great force, and is in keeping with the tenet of the Church that the glory of God is intelligence. Mormonism is full of great fundamental principles and truths. The counsel given by President Grant to Latter - day Saints to rear their children on the soil is only one of the great truths of the Gospel. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 9, 1923 I gather, too, that many men might support their families in more of luxury and com fort if they would but use reasonable care of the things which they have and the things which they acquire. AS I understand it, therefore, it is not only in self-denial and in forbearance to purchase the things which we desire, that thrift and economy consist, but in the proper preser' 'ation and use of the things with which we are blessed and I would urge upon my fellow members of the Church a more careful and thoughtful attention to all these various items that go into our economic life and that feature so largely in our successes or in our failures. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 30, 1923 Many people have asked how it is that Mormonism so func tions; how it is able to work in such a fashion ia behalf of humanity; because I might take anything else, any other activity, sound and good and designed for the welfare of the human race, and show practically the same conditions that apply to the course and the cause of ed u *ation. One man will declare that the reason why these things are so in Mormonism is merely because by some accidental condition, great men have arisen in Mormon dom. Joseph Smith was a tremendously great character; every student, whether of our people or not, will admit the greatness of the man. And so, those who do not understand us will say we had a great man to found our Church and that explains how we are able to show a condition so favorable. Another will say that Brigham Young was such a great man. And so, as I read recently in a book not long since published, all Mormonism may be explained because of the great men that Mormonism has had. Another book declares that the reason why this test of truth, this test of fitness to human conditions, measures up as well as it does, is because Mormonism has been placed under very difficult conditions. It had to light its way in Missouri. It had to fight its way out here in the desert. It has been opposed by men, and as a consequence it has been able, through Opposition, to develop into the great institution that it is to-day. Any such explanation, my brethren and sisters, is insufficient to those of us who have understood the spirit of the remarks that have been made at this conference. There are in this Church great fundamental principles, and reflected from those princi ples are great fundamental practices. The possession of these principles, the use of these practices, lie at the foundation of any explanation of the vitality and the strength and the fitness of Mormonism to serve the human race and that is my testimony to you, as I understand this great Gospel of Jesus Christ. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: January 18, 1923 The contention of the members of this Church is that the Gospel in its fulness and power has been restored to the earth and the fundamental principles of Christianity, many of which have been forgotten or rejected by the world, have again been restored for men's salvation. Mormonism seeks to round out and perfect a fragmentary Christianity. It seeks to bring into accord and union all Christian peoples and to prepare the world for the second advent of Jesus Christ. There have been some who have been unwilling to con cede to the members of this Church the appellation of Christians. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: November 29, 1923 Smith was a Prophet of God and that the Priesthood on the earth to-day came through him. 0 -how I reverence him and our present leader, President Heber J. Grant, he said. How sweet is the knowledge that Jesus is the Christ, for without His atoning blood, salvation could not have been.
