Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: February 6, 1902 One of the methods used by modern skeptics in attacking the Bible as the word of God is the claim that it contains contradictory statements, many of them of vital importance, which it would not do were it divinely inspired. As an instance attention is drawn to the many occasions related of ancient patriarchs, prophets and seers who saw, conversed and otherwise held com munion with the Lord - the God of Israel, yet in the writings of Moses, Paul and John it is asserted that no man hath seen God at any time, nor can any man see Him and live. These statements have also been perplexing to many Latter - day Saints, and several explanations, such as, no man hath seen God in the fulness of His glory and lived, have been suggested. But none of these attempted amend ments have been altogether satisfactory; they have not covered the whole ground, nor could they be made to fit to every instance recorded in the Scrip tures of the appearance of the Lord to the children of mortality. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: March 6, 1902 This intelligence will be received with sorrow by scores of people through out Utah. He was considered to be in good health and his friends had no suspicion that his useful career was so soon to terminate. For many years he has been a counselor to President Ivins, of the Mexican colonies, and has been a bulwark of strength to the people there. His influence was also extended to the Mexican people who held him in the highest regard, both the humble natives and the government officials, so that his services were of inestimable value to his people in that land and the sense of their loss at this time will be keenly felt among them all. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: July 3, 1902 A mere assent on our part to the divinity of the Redeemer is certainly not the faith that Christ taught. It was something more than mere assent or acknowledgement alone - it was distinctively active in its nature; He taught us that if we believe on Him we shall do the works that He did - yea, even greater works than He did. During the few years of the Lord's life, inactivity never played a part. His whole life was work personified. His faith, know ledge, power and love were proved by works, and His command to us is that we follow in His footsteps. Paul wrote to the Church at Rome, and the keynote of his letter was that the just shall live by faith. But he meant not that acknowledgement or assent alone, which is sometimes called by the name of faith he meant the real, living power, the assurance that leads us in a godly life of obedience to the laws and ordinances of the kingdom of heaven. This living faith in the Lord Jesus, which makes us happy and secures us everlasting life, is the power most lacking in the world to-day. One great reason is that the people of the world generally do not or will not, believe in and acknowledge revelation, that divine channel through which faith is nourished and developed. Few people believe that such a thing is necessary in this advanced age of education and culture, but the relationship between faith and revelation is very close. They go hand in hand and one is not enjoyed without the other. Paul tells us in his epistle to the Romans, tenth chapter, How then shall they call on him in whom they have not belie ved'! And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? We might ask further - How shall they be sent except they be called? And how shall they be called except God reveal whom He has chosen? When the Savior was here, He told us that He was sent of His Father. He called His workers to Him, divinely authorized them and sent them into the world saying - Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, and ye have not chosen me but I have chosen you and ordained you. During the Lord's personal ministry He was commissioned to organize the kingdom and do the work, but He promised that the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, should be sent at His departure from the earth. This Spirit should bring to the remembrance of the disciples all that the Savior had taught them, reveal to them the future and teach them the mysteries of the kingdom. This Holy Spirit was promised to all who will believe, repent and be baptized for the remission of their sins. (acts 2. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: March 20, 1902 In this article I have said nothing regarding revelations by dreams or visions, or by the visitation Of angels, as such manifestations make no difference to the point under consideration - to -what extent the wording Of the Bible is in God's own language or in that Of the earthly mouthpiece through which He made His will manifest-george reynolds in the Juvenile Instructor. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: March 27, 1902 God, that we existed before we came here in the flesh, and that Jesus is our 'elder Brother in very deed, as He tried to make the people understand when He lived here. God is His Father and our Father, His Son and our God. He was ln the beginning with God; and by Him and through Him all things were made that were made. All things, as the Apostle says, are Of God, but they are by and through Jesus, who is the Christ. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, as the Apostle John has written. Jesus Christ declared to those who were with Him that. They were His brethren, and He was their Elder Brother. He came from God to earth, to. Mingle among them, and to perform His work; and then He returned to the Father. He tried to make it clear to the people among whom He moved, that God is the Father of the human race. Said He: When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. After this manner, therefore, pray ye: Our' Father which art in heaven. This great truth should be understood by all mankind. It seems to me that if people really understood and believed this, they would be a little kinder than they are to each other. There would be a stronger feeling Of brotherhood between men and women and between nations, if all people understood that the sons and daughters of men who swarm upon the face of this globe which our Father has made for us, are brothers and sisters in spirit, and that we all came from that Eternal Father, no matter what may be our color or condition. We dwell here on the earth for a little time, and we shall have to go'back and give an account to our Father of the manner in which we have spent that time here. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 64: May 29, 1902 Theologians have many ways Of explaining this vision. But this is the plain explanation the Lord himself gives, and this is not figurative language. The vision itself was figurative; this is the explanation Of the figure. The resurrection of Israel is to be just as literal as the resurrection of the Saints who came out Of their graves into Jerusalem and appeared unto many. The Apostle Paul speaks very plainly in Romans viii: 11, But if the spirit Of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken (resurrect John v: 21) your mortal bodies by his spirit that dwelleth in you. He also says, We ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption Of our body. This shows clearly that our body, as well as our spirit, is to be redeemed.
