The Last Cruise reunites Wes Hardin and Tully Cain, now members of VFA-143, the Ghostriders, as they take the Navys newest fighter, the F-35 Lightning, on its initial deployment, on board the nuclear aircraft carrier, Abraham Lincoln, CVN-72. The cruise gets off to a surprise beginning when the Lincoln Strike Group is tasked to the Caribbean after the shoot down of an American Airlines plane. Future encounters take place in the skies over the Gulf of Aden and the Black Sea before the carrier arrives in the Arabian Sea and commences operations in the turbulent skies over Afghanistan which presents its own unique set of challenges. The action continues non-abated almost until the Lincoln and her consorts return to their home port of Norfolk, Virginia.
The Last Cruise of Saginaw is a novel following the lives of a naval crew on the ship the Saginaw. The eventual wreck is a marvel worth reading. In early December 1941 in the Philippines, a young Navy ensign named Kemp Tolley was given his first ship command, an old 76-foot schooner that had once served as a movie prop in John Ford's "The Hurricane." Crewed mostly by Filipinos who did not speak English and armed with a cannon that had last seen service in the Spanish-American War, the Lanikai was under top-secret presidential orders to sail south into waters where the Japanese fleet was thought to be. Grocery and bank clerk before the Second World War, Coast Guard seaman, merchant marine A., and army landing craft coxswain during it, and teacher-counselor for thirty years after the war. While teaching, he moonlighted in an amusement part and as an adult school teacher and librarian. After retirement he served on the 80 Olympic Games staff, put in fourteen years as an L.A.P.D. volunteer in a detective squad room, and is presently serving his Congregational church as a deacon.
