Abstract: Although many scholars have studied the work of Plautus, their work has focused largely on Plautus as a manipulator of Greek comedy or as an interesting study in archaic Latin. Only recently have scholars begun to look at Plautus in terms of his own language and his own audience. Even so, the few linguistic studies that have been done were primarily statistical and contributed little to an understanding of his audience. Earlier investigation into the language of Plautus reveals that he used the foreign languages of Greek and Punic along with his native Latin in his plays. Previously, most believed the Greek was used to mark its users as "intelligent," and the Punic was believed by most to be intended as gibberish; this is in fact not the case. Both languages served to place his characters in the real world in which he and his audience lived. This in turn reveals that Plautus expected his audience to have at least a basic understanding of Greek and some familiarity with Punic. While previous studies of Plautus that have analyzed his use of the idioms that served as markers of so-called "female" language have concluded that he crossed the boundaries of gendered language for whatever reason, the largest such study was primarily statistical and gave no reason as to why Plautus would have done that. In fact, Plautus did not use such markers as markers of "feminine" language at all, but rather as markers of emotion and power. Plautus played on the connotations such idioms had in the minds of his audience to create his own version of the adulescens amator, who was in fact the forerunner of the elegiac lover of later Roman poetry.
Titus Maccius Plautus (254-184 BC), commonly known as "Plautus," was a Roman playwright of the Old Latin period. His comedies are the earliest surviving intact works in Latin literature. The language and style of Plautus are not easy or simple. He wrote in a colloquial style far from the codified form of Latin that is found in Ovid or Virgil. This colloquial style is the everyday speech that Plautus would have been familiar with, yet that means that most students of Latin are unfamiliar with it. This volumes contains the original text of three of his most famous plays - Aulularia, Captivi and Menaechmi.

The plays of Plautus have long been recognized as a unique mine of information about the spoken Latin of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC. But detailed and up-to-date linguistic treatments of the Plautine meters and other phenomena in his plays have hitherto been lacking. This book seeks to remedy that gap by presenting a series of case-studies to glean information about the synchronic grammar of Plautine Latin, in particular the rhythmic organization of Latin speech and the effects of syntactic processes on Latin prosodic phonology. Some of the topics, such as enjambement and the aphaeresis of “est”, have never before received such treatment, while others, such as Meyer’s and Luchs’s laws, split resolutions, and iambic shortening, are provided a firmer linguistic footing, and fuller discussion of allied issues, than hitherto. Topics in Italic syntax (such as the syntactic structure of adpositional phrases and their history) and in Indo-European morphophonology (such as the prosodic status of finite verbs) are dealt with as well, as is an investigation into the effects of pragmatics on the rhythmic organization of phrases. The book will be of interest to classicists, comparative philologists, and general linguists.
