Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology, Vol. 4: January-December, 1908 The belief that mixtures of different narcotics produce a less dangerous narcosis is also erroneous. Pathologic changes in the different organs vary according to the preponderance of a certain anesthetizing agent in the mixture, but the main features of the lesions are about the same that are character istic of chloroform or ether-narcoses. Mixed narcotics are according to B. Mueller3 even more dangerous in their grave after-effects, Since a combined toxic effect takes place. Excerpt from The Journal of Urology, Vol. 8 The span of twenty years covered by the life of the American Urological Association is unquestionably the most important and far-reaching that will be known in the history of urology. Born at a time when urology was branching off from the realm of general medicine and surgery - the actual division becoming necessary through the clarification of the field by precise and accurate methods of study, such study opening up problems connected with each organ of the genito-urinary tract which required for their solution the individed efforts of individuals - the American Urological Association, built on broad, democratic principles, became a vital factor in the advancement of the specialty. It has been said that the sound practices of today were but visions the day they were born. Many of the urological problems which had arisen previous to the organization of this association have since developed into sound practices. These were the visions of internists, pathologists and surgeons; for few men, at that time, had devoted their efforts solely to the study of urology. Previous to the organization of the Americal Urological Association but one large society, the French Urological Association, was in existence. A limited society, composed of a number of general surgeons especially interested in genito-urinary surgery, venereologists, and the first few urologists in this country, had been in existence in America for sixteen years, doing pioneer work of a high type. Excerpt from The Journal of Urology, Vol. 2 The advances which have been made during the past five years in our knowledge of the non-protein blood constituents, have already been found of great value by the internist in the diagnosis and treatment of both nephritis and diabetes. The general surgeon not infrequently finds it necessary to operate upon patients while suffering from these conditions and such diagnostic and prognostic information as the blood tests afford, is of the greatest service in giving him an insight into the surgical risk of an operation. To the urological surgeon who may be called upon to perform a prostatectomy, nephrectomy or nephrotomy, make a decapsulation, etc., the prognostic information which the blood urea or creatinine will give regarding the functional activity of the kidneys, would seem quite indispensable at the present time. Before entering into a discussion of this question, it may be of interest to recount the more salient facts which have been ascertained regarding the changes which occur in the blood as the result of impaired kidney activity, particularly in comparison with the results of the slightly less recent phthalein test. This latter test, introduced by Rowntree and Geraghty (1) in 1910, not only supplied us with a most valuable diagnostic and prognostic test, but furnished the impetus in this country to numerous investigations on the functional activity of the kidney. Excerpt from The American Journal of Urology and Sexology, 1920, Vol. 16 In a similar way physicians are supposed to know all about sexology. One need confer with very few to discover that their actual knowledge is usually confined to obstetrics and in sexology they are often as ignorant and as bigoted as a fanatical clergyman. Neither has looked up the literature which modern sexology has produced and his opinions are little more if, as important, as those of any good natured policeman.
