Excerpt from Journal of the Society of Arts, and of the Institutions in Union, Vol. 15: From November 28, 1866, to November 15, 1867 It has been stated, on reliable authority, that from 1711 to 1714 Western Europe lost head of cattle by the plague, whilst from 1745 to 1748 three millions of cattle are believed to have perished from the disease in Western and Central Europe. N o accurate record exists of the mortality in our own country, but in Cheshire, which then as now experienced the severity of the disease, head of cattle died or were destroyed in a few months during the pestilence which commenced in 1745.
