In this introduction to the first five books of the Old Testament, Victor Hamilton moves chapter by chapter--rather than verse by verse--through the Pentateuch, examining the content, structure, and theology. Each chapter deals with a major thematic unit of the Pentateuch, and Hamilton provides useful commentary on overarching themes and connections between Old Testament texts. This second edition has been substantially revised and updated. The first edition sold over sixty thousand copies.
Joshua: The Ultimate Warrior is a modern day action adventure story about a 4 year old boy that was abandoned and found by a Chinese Secret Agent who was in hiding here in the United States after he avenged his family's murder by eliminating the most diabolical murderous high official in China. Joshua was the recipient of an incredibly unique education bestowed upon him by Master Chan and the members of a underground brotherhood called the Guardians of the Promise over a 17 year period in a private compound that was dedicated to his development in all areas of Martial Arts, Espionage, Science, Medicine, Aeronautics, Cryptology, Gymnastics and a myriad of subjects which he perfected to a level never before seen in one human being. Joshua's dedication to the Ancient Principles of Truth and Right Action was a result of studying the writings of the Wise Ones who left their deposits of Wisdom for those who would be initiated into the Sacred Defense Society. Once his education was complete and his skills sets were perfected, Joshua became the Chief Agent for a Non-Governmental Secret Agency called ICE who was called upon by various Countries throughout the world to solve critically dangerous threat scenarios that could jeopardize the global balance of peace and harmony. In this book the reader will be taken on a journey that highlights the human potential and the road to a maximized life experience. Joshua is an example of a life well invested for the purpose of being superbly equipped to become the greatest agent for good the world has ever seen.
The Anglo-Norman Bible's Joshua includes tales of spies, giants, the prostitute Rahab, the punishment of Achan, oracles, and Joshua's brilliant military victories. Joshua stops the sun. The first half of the book relates Joshua's stunning conquests in Canaan. The second half, the apportionment of the land among the tribes, detailed geographical surveys of territorial boundaries, and the death of Joshua. Skilful, well-paced story telling is a feature of the ANB's Joshua. To the accounts of Rahab and Achan we may add the chronicle of Joshua's successful, crushing campaign in the wake of the destruction of Makkedah. In rapid succession, and in an annalistic style involving staccato repetition of key phrases, the narrator relates the destruction of Libnah, Lachish, Eglon, Hebron, and Debir. The text of the ANB's Joshua is extant in British Library Royal 1 C III (base manuscript, L) and Paris, Bibliotheque nationale de France, MS francais 1 (P), both c. 1350 and both the Bibles of kings. L belonged at some point in the fifteenth century to Reading's Benedictine abbey, entering the royal library in 1530. Characteristic of L is its occasional insertion of short glosses in English or Latin to clarify or correct the Anglo-Norman text. An illustrated text, P was prepared by an English workshop for the fourth baron de Welles, John, and his wife, Maud, daughter of William, Lord Ros. This is clearly the Bible of a wealthy and well-connected English family. After the Welles family, the manuscript belonged to Louis de Bruges (1492), then to King Louis XII of France.
In this comprehensive little book, Andrew Cort brings to life the history and legends of the twelve hundred years between the conquering of the Promised Land and the birth of Jesus. It includes the stories of Saul, David, and Solomon, the building of the Temple and the origin of the Freemason legend, the fate of the Ten Lost Tribes, the miracles of Elijah, the Babylonian Exile, Queen Esther and the Purim Festival, the influence of Aristotle and Epicurus, Judah Maccabee and the story of Chanukah, the building of the second Temple, the canonization of the Hebrew Bible, Caesar and Cleopatra, the Roman oppression, the origins of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Essenes, plus much, much more. The book can stand alone as a fascinating account of these years, or it can be read as a companion volume to the author's major work on mythology, religion, and culture: 'RETURN TO MEANING: The American Psyche in Search of its Soul'.
Joshua to Chroniclessurveys the rich literature of the Old Testament books Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, and I and II Chronicles. Campbell argues that while these books may appear historical, they are more theological--better understood as Israel's efforts to interpret their people's experience. The book is helpfully structured with overview and review sections.
