In Reconstructing the Native South, Melanie Benson Taylor examines the diverse body of Native American literature in the contemporary U.S. South--literature written by the descendants of tribes who evaded Removal and have maintained ties with their southeastern homelands. There are ten tribes featured in the book. While there were many photographs taken of American Indians beginning in the 1860s, very few match Curtis's quality and beauty. Between 1900 and 1927, Curtis would visit eighty different tribes, travelling from the U.S.-Mexico border to the Arctic Circle, from the Great Plains to the Pacific Coast.
