WITH 15 PHOTOS Chris Dorner was a cop with the LAPD who was fired after reporting that his training officer beat up a handcuffed, non-resisting suspect. He appealed. Lost. Then snapped. In his manifesto that he posted on Facebook, he vowed to kill those associated with him being fired as well as their families. His first victims were the daughter of the LAPD lawyer who represented him and her fiance. This recent case from 2013 includes several pictures, some of which are quite graphic, including the all-out manhunt for Dorner and his controversial death. Did the LAPD blow the whole scenario way out of proportion. Additionally, newer reports regarding Monica Quan have arisen that render an even greater air of speculation to the whole ordeal. Monica Quan and her fiancé, both with law enforcement backgrounds, were found in a car that was parked in a parking garage in a million-dollar predominantly white neighborhood. The parking garage was being guarded by a police officer who did not see Dorner, a large black man, break in. The garages are monitored 24/7 and yet there is no footage of Dorner either breaking in, killing anyone, being there or leaving. Nothing. But that's what the LAPD wants people to believe.

Known as the Co-Ed Butcher, Edmund Kemper was a cannibal, necrophiliac and serial killer who, between 1964 and 1973, killed ten women including his mother who he beheaded, used her head as a dartboard and for oral sex. A manifesto that lays out grievances in painstaking detail, titled: “My Twisted World,” describes stories from a childhood onward that seemed to have laid the foundation for anger towards women, “alpha males,” and society in general.Describing plans for a “Day of Retribution,” on which: “All of those beautiful girls I've desired so much in my life, but can never have because they despise and loathe me, I will destroy.”Rodger, 22, left six people dead in a knife and gun rampage in the Californian University of Isla Vista in May 2014, before apparently shooting himself in the head after a firefight with police.His killing spree began after he posted a chilling video on YouTube titled “Elliot Rodgers Retribution,” in which he threatened to "slaughter" women who had rebuffed him.
Scholars and lay persons alike routinely express concern about the capacity of democratic publics to respond rationally to emotionally charged issues such as crime, particularly when race and class biases are invoked. This is especially true in the United States, which has the highest imprisonment rate in the developed world, the result, many argue, of too many opportunities for elected officials to be highly responsive to public opinion. Limiting the power of democratic publics, in this view, is an essential component of modern governance precisely because of the risk that broad democratic participation can encourage impulsive, irrational and even murderous demands. These claims about panic-prone mass publics--about the dangers of 'mob rule'--are widespread and are the central focus of Lisa L. Miller's The Myth of Mob Rule. Are democratic majorities easily drawn to crime as a political issue, even when risk of violence is low? Do they support 'rational alternatives' to wholly repressive practices, or are they essentially the bellua multorum capitum, the "many-headed beast," winnowing problems of crime and violence down to inexorably harsh retributive justice? Drawing on a comparative case study of three countries--the U.S., the U.K. and the Netherlands--The Myth of Mob Rule explores when and with what consequences crime becomes a politically salient issue. Using extensive data from multiple sources, the analyses reverses many of the accepted causal claims in the literature and finds that: serious violence is an important underlying condition for sustained public and political attention to crime; the United States has high levels of both crime and punishment in part because it has failed, in racially stratified ways, to produce fundamental collective goods that insulate modern democratic citizens from risk of violence, a consequence of a democratic deficit, not a democratic surplus; and finally, countries with multi-party parliamentary systems are more responsive to mass publics than the U.S. on crime and that such responsiveness promotes protection from a range of social risks, including from excessive violence and state repression.
