John Christian Hoffman was born in about 1705 in Germany. His parents were Hans Georg Hoffman and Catherina Margaret. He married and had seven children. They emigrated in 1751and settled first in Virginia and then moved on to Orange County, North Carolina. He died in 1780. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.

Jacob and John Hoffman (b.1760), brothers, emigrated about 1775 or 1776 from the Palatinate of Germany to York County, Pennsylvania. Jacob Hoffman later moved to Leeper's Creek, Gaston County, North Carolina. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Iowa, South Carolina, Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas and elsewhere.
