Excerpt from The Historie and Life of King James the Sext: Written Towards the Latter Part of the Sixteenth Century The Historie and Life of King James the Sext, is published from a copy of the original manuscript, which David Crawfurd of Drumsoy, historiographer to Queen Anne, employed in compiling his Memoirs of the Affairs of Scotland. In a preface to the first edition (London, 1706), he informs us, after a long invective against Buchanan, that he would be as plain and as brief as possible concerning the memoirs themselves. I had all the substance of these sheets from an ancient Ms. presented me by my very good friend, Sir James Baird, of Sauchtonhall, who purchased it by mere accident, from the necessitous Widow of an episcopal clergyman.
