Excerpt from The Student's Manual of Modern History: Containing the Rise and Progress of the Principal European Nations, Their Political History, and the Changes in Their Social Condition IN this the sixth edition the Supplementary Chapter has been considerably enlarged, so as to bring down the History to the Treaty of Peace signed at Paris, March 30, 1856; the Chronological Tables first introduced into the fifth edition have been retained. On the other hand, that the volume might not become inconveniently bulky, it was thought desirable to make some retrenchments of the less essential matter in the earlier chapters, and in those on the Papal power, the Inquisition, and the Colonies. Excerpt from The Student's Manual of Irish History This may seem a strong expression; but I know, unhappily, too many instances in which being ashamed of being Irish, has led to being ashamed of being Catholic. I do not doubt that many American priests, who may honor me by reading these pages, could corroborate my statements. Excerpt from A Students Manual of English Constitutional History English AN author needs to justify the appearance of so ambitious and yet so imperfect a work as I fear this will be found A twofold reason has prompted its compilation. In the first place, text-books on Con stitutional History are few, and experience suggests that those which exist deal with the subject on unsatis fac'tory lines. The development of an institution is subordinated to the details of a general narrative. No doubt the natural interest in the play of individual character will always place so-called political history in the van of historical pursuits. But if the study of history is, as it promises, to become a great educational medium, it is to the history of institutions rather than of dynasties or of individual men that we must look to provide the fittest mental training. As a preliminary it is necessary to trace the evolution and growth of each institution or set of institutions separately and apart from the accidental events of contemporaneous political history. Otherwise the institution is lost sight of in a mass of unimportant personal detail; it is difficult to pick up the threads Of its development while the attention of the student is at every turn called off to irrelevant matter, and the mind altogether fails to comprehend the great impersonal movement by which an institution shows itself to be something greater than the greatest man who has helped to mould and to work. Excerpt from A Student's Manual of the History of India To MY readers. - I have been induced to write this Manual of the History of India to supply a want which I have ob served to exist among aii ciasses or' English people. Most of' my young friends tell me they are never taught anything about India; and while I deplore this, I also see that many persons of mature age are deterred by their length, and other causes, from attempting the perusal of the larger Indian his tories. It occurred to me, therefore, that a complete, but easy history, might be acceptable and useful to all; andi was the more led to this consideration from my own expe rience; for I do not know of any work from Which enough can be learned without difficulty - either to satisfy present requirements, or to induce a more general study. The large Histories of India, besides being voluminous, are costly; most of them are out of print, and thus beyond the reach of ordi nary students. Many of them are only fi'agments - histories of peculiar periods or peoples; and thus reference is required to many works by the student who desires to follow the oom plete history of India in all its branches.
