The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem has a long historical tradition dating back to the 12th century. In contrast, the Maltese jurisdiction has a history of ranging for only a half century being established in 1966. In spite of its relatively short history, the jurisdiction quickly became central to the International Order's organization housing its Grand Chancery at the international headquarters sited at Torri ta' Lanzun - a renovated 15th century fortified farmhouse. This work looks at the development and activities of the national jurisdiction beside reviewing the history of the "hereditary" jurisdiction sited in Malta - the Grand Commandery of the Castello.
The Military and Hospitaller Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem has a long historical tradition dating back to the 12th century. In contrast, the Maltese jurisdiction has a history ranging for only six decades being established in 1964. In spite of its relatively short history and limited membership base, the jurisdiction quickly became central to the management of the International Order. This work looks at the developmental history and reviews broadly the philanthropic activities of the national jurisdiction, besides also reviewingthe history of its sister 'magisterial' jurisdiction also based in Malta - the Grand Commandery of the Castello.
At the close of the Napoleonic Wars, Malta officially became part of the British Empire in 1814. As the British presence there increased, so too did public interest in the island's history, particularly the military religious order of the Knights Hospitaller. In 1858, the army officer Whitworth Porter (1827-92) published this two-volume work, tracing the fortunes of the order since its establishment following the First Crusade. Incorporating details of the knights' social habits and customs into his narrative, Porter also provides supplementary material such as royal and papal documents in translation. Volume 2 opens in 1522 with the surrender of Rhodes, followed by the order's eventual relocation to Malta, which the Ottomans besieged without success in 1565. The coverage extends to the blockade of Valletta, then under French control, at the end of the eighteenth century.--
This documentation, discussion and illustration of a collection of works of art dispersed in churches, museums and other historical buildings in Malta has been designed to illustrate the Order's early legacy in Malta.
This book details the origin of the Grand Hospitaller Priory of Messina. It discusses a breadth of themes, such as the historiography, the Hospitaller’s European commandery and Sicilian patrimony, its management and organization in the seventeenth century, its religious practices, and the prioral mansion in Messina. The final chapter includes a detailed account of the 1674 Messina insurrection against the Spanish overlords. This event plunged the priory into political chaos, fracturing it and pitting members against each other. It also shattered neutrality issues embedded in the statutes of the religion and ignoring the precepts emanating from the Convent on Malta. The Hospitaller Grand Priory of Messina in the Seventeenth Century will appeal to students and scholars alike interested in the Crusading Orders, the history of the Knights Hospitaller, and the history of Malta.
