Confederate soldier Homer Lusta returns to Earth 150 years after the Civil War, the War Between the States, or as Homer would say, the War of Northern Aggression. He remains invisible as he searches for an author to write the "real story" of that war. Finally Homer selects "Old Bob," materializes himself, and convinces Bob to write the story according to his memory. Homer's adaptation is reasonably accurate and loaded with "Homer humor" as he recalls his endeavors to save the South and protect underage brother, Lack, who illicitly has sneaked, early on, into the battlefield. The boys are deceived by a corrupt gang of Rebel deserters into thinking the War is over. Unknowingly, they join these renegades, but soon realize they are traitors involved in iniquitous activity. The boys decide to right this wrong. They search out and inform appropriate Rebel officers. Now having become heroes, the boys return home to accolades few in that war-torn land could ever imagine.
A romance hatched in 1968 in war-torn Vietnam comes to a violent end when enemy guerrillas attack the U. S. Naval Hospital at Da Nang, taking the life of Navy nurse Angela Robbins and stealing her opal engagement ring, given to her by Marine pilot Warner Nichols in contemplation of marriage. Time and the War continue and Warner's private focus remains on the missing ring and the identity of the perpetrator. His life is almost destroyed except for Vic Tobias, his wingman who monitors his every move in the air, and for British nurse Jennifer Hartness, who cares for him as she positions herself in Angela's shoes. It is only after Warner returns to the States and is later re-assigned to Vietnam that a clue surfaces, renewing his vow to unravel the mystery.
Stories, mostly humorous, some nostalgic, about Marine Corps Boot Camp. What wasn't funny then can be humorous now. Marines, relatives, and friends submitted over 400 first-hand stories. The best of these are in this book. As one new Marine said to the author, "Nothing's funny in Boot Camp." But it is, years later.
