Poetry is a packsack of invisible keepsakes,” Carl Sandberg once said. We are blessed with the gift of memory or a packsack of keepsakes or memories of things special, pleasurable, and inspirational along with a recall of things not so much so. In my packsack is an array of events, thoughts and things that hopefully appeals to the reader of this book. As is usually my way, I ask readers of my poems across the country to read and comment on them and here is what a few have said: "Wonderful, Larry! You are a great poet. Such vivid imagery! Love it!" "Your best words ever, Larry." "Just so beautiful. Now I’m crying." "So sweet. Made me cry." "Can’t read this without tears both of sorrow and thanks for those lives gone." "What a nice way to tell a story." "A history lesson and really good poem all rolled into one. With the news from the past couple of days, this is written at a good time. You’ve no idea how much I appreciate your sharing your poems with me. I always look forward to reading them."
Roses plead to go out to dance; an old oak tree offers advice; paintings of gods and goddesses come alive. In What Flowers Say, renowned writer George Sand dares children to fantasize, to believe in an alternate world. This magical collection, originally penned for her grandchildren, calls into question what is real, a life lesson from someone who refused to accept the gender roles available to women in the nineteenth century. Sand shares her love and immense knowledge of science and mythology, engages issues of class and character, and captures the wonder and determination of a curious child, offering all of us a true sense of infinite possibilities—well beyond the world we live in.
Simple text and photographs depict the parts of flowers and their pollination.
This book was written to help people realize the value of flowers and how they can help us in our every day lives. I've presented the flowers in a fun way, flower reading, to give people not only the meanings of flowers, but also how colors, shapes and numbers. impact our moods and decisions.
“A flower is not a flower alone; a thousand thoughts invest it.” Daffodils signal new beginnings, daisies innocence. Lilacs mean the first emotions of love, periwinkles tender recollection. Early Victorians used flowers as a way to express their feelings—love or grief, jealousy or devotion. Now, modern-day romantics are enjoying a resurgence of this bygone custom, and this book will share the historical, literary, and cultural significance of flowers with a whole new generation. With lavish illustrations, a dual dictionary of flora and meanings, and suggestions for creating expressive arrangements, this keepsake is the perfect compendium for everyone who has ever given or received a bouquet.
“Like a favorite recipe, a posy is meant to be savored and shared. Try it yourself, and … welcome a bit of floral enchantment into your life.” —Amy Stewart, author of The Drunken Botanist Inspired by the Victorian-era language of flowers, a posy is a small, round bouquet of flowers, herbs, and plants meant to convey a message, such as dahlias for gratitude, sunflowers for adoration, or thyme for bravery. These floral poems have become Teresa Sabankaya’s signature. Brides want them for their weddings, but a posy is a lovely gift any time of year, and one that readers can easily put together from their garden or with blooms from their local florist. In The Posy Book, Sabankaya shares step-by-step instructions, floral recipes for more than 20 posies, and ideas for seasonal variations. A modern floral dictionary, with 12 original paintings by celebrated illustrator Maryjo Koch, will help readers craft their own posies filled with personal meaning.
An enchanting and captivating novel about how our untold stories haunt us — and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive. After her family suffers a tragedy, nine-year-old Alice Hart is forced to leave her idyllic seaside home. She is taken in by her grandmother, June, a flower farmer who raises Alice on the language of Australian native flowers, a way to say the things that are too hard to speak. Under the watchful eye of June and the women who run the farm, Alice settles, but grows up increasingly frustrated by how little she knows of her family’s story. In her early twenties, Alice’s life is thrown into upheaval again when she suffers devastating betrayal and loss. Desperate to outrun grief, Alice flees to the dramatically beautiful central Australian desert. In this otherworldly landscape Alice thinks she has found solace, until she meets a charismatic and ultimately dangerous man. Spanning two decades, set between sugar cane fields by the sea, a native Australian flower farm, and a celestial crater in the central desert, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows Alice’s unforgettable journey, as she learns that the most powerful story she will ever possess is her own.
This unique gift book is a reminder that whatever someone may be going through, they always deserve flowers. When it's the most difficult to find the right words, we turn to flowers to express our compassion and care. This book is like a bouquet of flowers in book form. Based on Tucker Nichols's celebrated multimedia art project entitled Flowers for Sick People, this book gathers vibrant floral paintings and pairs them with poetic dedications that pay tribute to a kaleidoscope of human experiences, from acts of unsung heroism to mundane moments of everyday beauty: “Flowers for Anyone Currently Eating a Cinnamon Bun in a Hospital Cafeteria,” “Flowers for the Last Time You Laughed So Hard It Hurt,” “Flowers for Spectacular Failures,” and more. Deeply relatable and equal parts heart-wrenching and humorous, this book is a comfort and encouragement in any moment and a salve for the loneliness that can come in life's toughest times. INSPIRING PROJECT: PBS NewsHour spotlighted Tucker Nichols and his art for spreading kindness and connection during the isolating years of the pandemic. After inviting the public to submit names and addresses of their loved ones with illnesses, Nichols created and mailed original flower paintings to hundreds of requesters. This ongoing multimedia project evolved into the larger Flowers for series, which pays tribute to the vast array of moments and experiences that may be easy to overlook. ACCLAIMED ARTIST: Along with his multimedia art and health projects, Tucker Nichols also sculpts and makes art for publication. His work has been published in McSweeney's, The New Yorker, and the op-ed pages of the New York Times and exhibited in hospitals, art centers, and fine art museums across the globe. MEANINGFUL GIFT BOOK: This beautiful hardcover is like a bouquet of flowers, a caring gift not just in times of sickness, loneliness, and grief but whenever a loved one could use a little support or a thoughtful surprise. Full of colorful artwork and poetic text that speaks to all that we have to be grateful for—even when it's difficult—this book can be gifted in gratitude or sympathy to family and friends or to yourself as an act of self-care.
