Detailed physico-chemical and structural studies indicate that Dialkyldithiophosphates generally bind transition metal ions in a chelating bidentate fashion, but their behaviour with organo-metal (Ge, Sn & Pb) moieties shows interesting and not yet fully understood variations. With diorganotin species, these behave in a simple bidentate manner, but triorganotin dialkyldithiophosphates have been shown to be tetrahedral in nature with the ligand unidentally bonded. However, organogermanium derivatives irrespective of the number of organic groups on germanium are in general volatile tetrahedral species. (jes).
