Excerpt from The Federal Farm-Loan System in Operation The work here presented is the outgrowth of a paper read before a class in Economic History in the School of Business, University of Minnesota, in December, 1919. In the preparation of the statistical material the author has had at his disposal the statements and documents which have been issued by the Federal Farm Loan Board and the several land banks since the establishment of the Federal farm-loan system. These have been supplemented by such other material as appears in the Bibliography (Appendix C)and the authors observations as an official of the land bank located in St. Paul, Minnesota. The true object of the Federal Farm Loan Act is not generally understood, though the processes of its operation are not difficult to comprehend. If this presentation assists in a measure toward a general understanding of the real object and worth of this new rural-credit system, it has served a purpose. The author's thanks are due to the officers of the Federal Land Bank of Saint Paul, and especially to President E. G. Quamme, for their many kindly suggestions; to Prof. N. S. B. Gras, of the University of Minnesota, who assisted in the arrangement of this work; and to Miss Marian Rubins, of the University of Minnesota, for criticism in the preparation of the manuscript and the reading of the proof.
