The Tao te Ching is the second most translated and published book in the world, right behind the Holy Bible. With so many choices available, why add to the number? Within weeks after first undergoing a near-death, out-of-body experience in the summer of 1992, Roger Charles Warren suffered a head injury which released him from work for a full year. While on sabbatical recovering, he began to study the Tao te Ching. He collected every translation he could find. Not satisfied with the vast differences in each one, Roger began studying Chinese characters and their definitions, and began making notes, comparing the many different commentaries and lessons in addition to the many English and Chinese versions. Within a year, by Spring 1993, while living as a lay minister at the Holy Cross Abbey in Cañon City, Colorado, Rev. Warren produced a version of the Tao te Ching designed to return to the simple, basic truth that is this book. With this translation, the student can arrive at their own interpretation, free from editorial comments and distracting footnotes. The reader is free to contemplate, meditate, and receive inspiration from the beauty of the simple text itself. Plain but beautiful. Unadorned yet true. May you find peace and grace as you read the pages within.
