This book presents the Maternal Sensitivity Program (MSP), an eight-session home-delivered intervention designed to enhance overall maternal sensitivity to infant behavior between the third and the tenth month of life using video feedback and live modeling strategies. The intervention was based on successful international programs but was specifically developed to fit the realities and needs of low-income countries, whose public health services rely on scarce human and economic resources. Secure attachment has been found to be the foundation for neurobiological, socioemotional, and cognitive development. Decades of research on attachment theory was utilized to inform this literature review. Research has shown that when maternal sensitivity is defined as a timely and appropriate response to an infant in distress (e.g., crying) there is a strong positive correlation with attachment security. Early attachment experiences were shown to shape the infant's right brain coping system (i.e., sense of security for regulation of emotional states) where the neurobiological core of the unconscious resides. The interactive regulation of right brain and attachment psychobiology has been shown to be the substrate of empathy, an important aspect in mental health. Clinical implications were reviewed in regards to early interventions that lower the risk of psychopathology by acquiring an earned secure attachment style. The review concludes with recommendations for empirical considerations on parental influences of secure attachment.
Ethological attachment theory is a landmark of 20th century social and behavioral sciences theory and research.
