Excerpt from The Effect of Oxygen in Coal The discussion Of chemical changes that have occurred in the coals and Of the nature of the-compounds now existing in them is left to the professional chemist, who is familiar with the great mass Of litera ture concerning the chemistry of coals. Excerpt from The Diffusion of Oxygen Through Stored Coal The chamber may be considered divided into three compartments, placed one above the other. Details of the lower compartment and of the coal compartment are given in figure 1, in which ca, and a, represent tubes opening into the interior, a, and at, being closed with rubber stoppers. Through a, was run a capillary tube 6, from the center of the lower compartment to the gas-sampling apparatus. The coal was supported by a stiff steel-wire net, d, of -in0h mesh, resting on the lugs e and 0. When coal finer than g-inch mesh was used a fine wire gauze was laid over the net. Excerpt from Effects of Oxygen on the Sulphur and Heating Value of Coal: Thesis The question of the deterioration of coal in storage and also the closely connected subject of spontaneous combustion in storage are old ones. The literature on these two subjects is very extensive and hard to get at, but a good summary of the work on spontaneous combustion is given in the appendix of Parr and Kressman's1 bulletin on, The Spontaneous Combustion of Coal. The first part of the work outlined in this paper was ansattempt to find out what part iron sulphide had in the spon tensons combustion of coal but this work was stopped before anything definite was decided upon. The second part of this work dealt with the change in calorific value after treatment with oxygen at a pressure of 20 to 25 atmospheres. Excerpt from A Study of the Oxidation of Coal That some coals become heated by oxidation much more easily than others is shown by figure 1, which presents the results of heating six different coals, and a sample of a sulphur parting at constant temperatures in a current of oxygen. Excerpt from Effects of Storage Upon the Properties of Coal It will be seen from this summary that the most serious part of the problem relates to the matter of spontaneous heating, and prob ably the least serious phase relates to deterioration and actual loss of heat values. It is certain that at the present time a better under standing of these difficulties has been reached, and there is reason for believing that this better understanding of the fundamental principles involved will lead to some practicable and safe procedure for the stocking of bituminous coal.
