Measuring innovation in education and understanding how it works is essential to improve the quality of the education sector. Monitoring systematically how pedagogical practices evolve would considerably increase the international education knowledge base. We need to examine whether, and how ...
This book highlights the scope and variety of curricular change with educational technology. Research teams from 28 countries in North America, Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa developed 174 case reports of innovative classrooms all over the globe. They used classroom observations, interviews with teachers and principals, and focus groups of students and parents to examine trends and effects. The study highlights innovative uses of technology and identifies environmental criteria that could be used in implementing technology integration strategies.
School districts in the United States are being asked to adopt innovative instructional techniques to meet the needs of today's students. However, these requested changes may be met with resistance by teachers, and when this happens, change initiatives can fail. This instrumental case study investigates the actions and experiences of teachers and administrators within a STEAM elementary magnet school in the Midwest that has successfully implemented innovative instructional techniques with students from Kindergarten through sixth grade. Because acceptance of innovative change in schools is frequently low, studying those schools that have successfully changed may offer important insights about the nature of their success. The process of change in place within this STEAM magnet school, once identified, may be applied to other schools attempting the same types of changes. The research questions for this study are: (1) How do teachers and administrators involved in a STEAM elementary school describe their success when implementing innovative instructional techniques? (2) How do the prior experiences of teachers affect their decision to implement innovative instructional techniques? (3) How do district administrators describe the processes and strategies utilized when developing a successful STEAM elementary school? To provide the background for this topic, a review of three literature topics was completed: 1. The management of change stream of theory investigates communication, the change process, management models, and the management of resistance. 2. Change within the school setting, speaks to research on administrative support, collaboration, teacher experience, and motivation. 3. Acceptance and implementation of innovation focuses on technology implementation, teacher experience with innovation, and barriers to implementation. Keywords: innovative instruction, change, STEAM schools, technology implementation, magnet schools, instructional techniques
Ensure your technological integration is leading to deeper learning! Have we developed, at considerable cost and effort, classrooms that are digitally rich but innovation poor? Timely and powerful, this book offers a new framework to elevate instructional practices with technology and maximize student learning. The T3 Framework helps categorize students’ learning as translational, transformational, or transcendent, sorting through the low-impact applications to reach high-impact usage. Teachers and leaders will find: Examples of technology use at the translational, transformational, and transcendent levels Activities, guides, and prompts for deeper learning Evaluative rubrics to self-assess current technology use, establish meaningful goals, and track progress This guide helps teachers and leaders realize the potential of modern teaching and learning tools to unleash students’ passion for limitless learning. "We need to build collaborative communities of students using the social media aspects of technology to change classroom conversations from monologue to dialogue, increasing student impact questions, and allowing errors. This is the core of Magana’s claims, and how we’ll see technology really make the difference we’re after!" —John Hattie, Laureate Professor, Deputy Dean of MGSE, Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute "Fresh, innovative, and revolutionary, Magana′s T3 Framework promises to challenge the status quo and invite disruptive practices in educational technology." —Yong Zhao Author, World Class Learners "The T3 Framework is a brilliant breakthrough in our understanding and use of technology for learning." —Michael Fullan, Professor Emeritus OISE/University of Toronto, Canada
This book is based on a set of stories from teachers and education professionals in thirteen OECD countries. Twenty-three case studies tell of innovations in practice involving school teachers, inspectors, academics and policy makers.
"With job opportunities in decline for youth with no postsecondary degree, and college completion rates especially for students of color stagnating, a high school diploma is no longer enough. To solve this large-scale global problem. High school must be completely redesigned and reinvented providing all students real opportunity with both equity and excellence. P-TECH (Pathways in Technology Early College High School) has done just that by combining public high schools and community colleges in partnership with employers, providing both opportunity and support for all students, regardless of income, race or any screen for admission. Unlike many school models, this innovative and effective approach has spread across the US and around the world, eliminating barriers to replication by engaging all stakeholders. The first P-TECH, opened in a low-income Brooklyn neighborhood, across from a public housing project, and served 100% students of color. It has become the model for school reform across over a dozen US states and nearly twenty countries. Praised by President Obama, governors in red and blue states, and heads of nations, its story is told in this book through the personal stories of students who have destroyed the myths about which students can succeed. Their stories demonstrate that all students, if given the opportunity and support, can reach great heights in high school, college, and career"--
