Excerpt from The Scottish Medical and Surgical Journal, Vol. 18: January to June, 1906 Looking back on past addresses by my Presidential for bears, the majority have dealt with the work of the Society during the term of Presidential office of the speaker. This method has never appealed to me. N 0 age can write its own history. The work recently done by this Society cannot be correctly judged by me, at any rate. It is too recent. I am too near to it. Fortunately I have heard, as an example for me to follow, valedictory addresses from your Presidents taking a more distant view, sometimes looking back, sometimes looking for ward. I avoid the latter course; it is too dangerous, and I for a moment would like to look back in the annals of the Society. This is a year of centenary celebrations: John Knox, Sir Thomas Browne, Trafalgar, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the Royal Medico Chirurgical Society of London.
