Cloud computing is a buzz-word in today’s information technology (IT) that nobody can escape. But what is really behind it? There are many interpretations of this term, but no standardized or even uniform definition. Instead, as a result of the multi-faceted viewpoints and the diverse interests expressed by the various stakeholders, cloud computing is perceived as a rather fuzzy concept. With this book, the authors deliver an overview of cloud computing architecture, services, and applications. Their aim is to bring readers up to date on this technology and thus to provide a common basis for discussion, new research, and novel application scenarios. They first introduce the foundation of cloud computing with its basic technologies, such as virtualization and Web services. After that they discuss the cloud architecture and its service modules. The following chapters then cover selected commercial cloud offerings (including Amazon Web Services and Google App Engine) and management tools, and present current related open-source developments (including Hadoop, Eucalyptus, and Open CirrusTM). Next, economic considerations (cost and business models) are discussed, and an evaluation of the cloud market situation is given. Dynamic complexity results from hidden, unknown factors—or more precisely, interactions between factors—that can unexpectedly impact the performance of systems. When the influences of dynamic complexity are not measured and understood, new never-seen-before behaviors can come as unwelcomed surprises, which disrupt the performance of systems. Left alone, processes that were once prized for their efficiency unexpectedly begin to degrade—costs increase, while volumes and quality decline. Evidence of problems may come too late for effective resolution as technology advancements induce rapid change and compress the time available to react to that change. The results of dynamic complexity are always negative and unmanaged dynamic complexity can bring business or global systems to the point of sudden chaos. The 2009 H1N1 pandemic, 2008 Credit Crunch and 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster are global examples of the dangers of undiagnosed dynamic complexity. With increasing frequency executive leaders today are discovering that their business and IT system performance levels are not meeting expectations. This book focuses on the current research on the dynamic spectrum sharing for efficient spectrum resource utilization, which covers the overlay spectrum sharing, underlay spectrum sharing and database-assisted spectrum sharing related research issues. Followed by a comprehensive review and in-depth discussion of the current state-of-the-art research literature and industry standardization, this book first presents a novel overlay spectrum sharing framework for dynamic utilization of available cellular frequency bands, formulates the dynamic spectrum sharing problem as a dynamic resource demand-supply matching problem, and accordingly develops a distributed fast spectrum sharing algorithm to solve the resource matching problem. A self-awareness power control approach for multi-hop routing selection is proposed, which can establish an effective and practical routing selection optimization in secondary access networks and minimize the interference to primary users. Finally, this book offers dynamic secondary access scheme for database-assisted spectrum sharing networks, which is targeted to support the prosperous wireless multimedia networking applications by leveraging the TV white spaces of geolocation databases while satisfying QoS guarantees of secondary users.
