From a Copy in the Nelson Papers. December 5th, 1800. 'My dear Sir Edward, Many thanks for your letter: you know how I am fixed with Hardy, who could not get a Ship. I wrote immediately to Lord Spencer, who says, that if the Princess Charlotte' is good, you have a fair chance for her, and that he shall be happy to show his regard for you. Therefore, I write this Which he bad captured at the Battle of St. Vincent. He did not, however, hoist bis Flag until the 17th of January, 1801. Note by Sir Edward Berry: --"Lord Spencer ordered the Princess Charlotte to be repaired: when I had her nearly ready, I was superseded by F. Gardner (a senior Officer), and appointed to the Ruby by Lord St. Vincent or Sir Thomas Troubridge." scrawl to say how you stand.
