Excerpt from The Day-Star Prophet The Abdent. They are old, The two who wander there, Drinking clear draughts of scented mountain air, Ere yet tlie Evenings breeze hath sighed farewell To the last gleam of gold That pales and dies, touched by Nights shadowy spell. And yet a glow, Beyond the glow of youth, hath gemmed their eyes Up-cast with martyr-rapture to the skies: Such as perchance was kindled by the sight Of Canaan's land, vouchsafed on Pisgah's height. In his who ne'er within its bounds might go, But who beheld it, - and was satisfied; Beheld the goodly land, - gave thanks, and - died. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 95: May 4, 1933 There are a great many men and women, in fact, the great majority of all the people in the world, believe that Joseph Smith was a false prophet. When you contemplate the fact that this revelation was given a little over one hundred years ago, and that it is recognized as scientifically true to-day, after investiga tions have been made by great scientific minds, it is remarkable that a young man should be able to give something so marvel lous as this Word of Wisdom. So as a tribute to the prophet who gave it, who was and is and ever will be a prophet of the living God, I shall read it. All the disbelief of the world will never change that fact, because it is a fact. All the disbelief of the world cannot change the fact that this man was chosen of God and became the head of the Church of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. Disbelief does not change facts. Stephen N. Haskell (1833–1922) was an evangelist, missionary and writer in the early days of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: August 25, 1910 Those of us who have been baptised by those holding the authority of this Priesthood are indeed born again out of the water and of the Spirit, and inasmuch as we abide in the truth then are we joint heirs with Jesus Christ. As a child I knew the prophet, Joseph Smith. I was as familiar with him and in his home as I was with my own father and in my father's home. What I remember of him is that he was a good man, a man who loved the poor, a man who had a heart like a woman's in sympathy for all the afflicted. He was a good father to his children and he was a prophet of God. N ow I know this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 75: May 8, 1913 First: That such a condition of general apostasy was foreseen by the apostle and prophets as recorded by their writings in the Bible. Second: That the churches of to-day do not measure up to the description of Christ's church given in holy writ, and as described by the early Christian fathers. Third: That all the different contending Christian creeds cannot be right, else Christ becomes the author of confusion, and as He says, A house divided against itself cannot stand, so all the different and conflicting creeds cannot expect to stand. Fourth: That it was predicted that God would restore His gospel and that, too, after the time John, the Beloved, was on the Isle of Patmos. Fifth That the claims of Joseph Smith are not out of keeping with scripture, and that the church so often ascribed to his founding bears the marks of the original institution, together with all the gifts and blessings that were enjoyed by former-day saints. Sixth: That the teachings of the Church to-day are both scrip tural and reasonable. Seventh: That a vast deal of external evidence has come to light since the death of the prophet to prove his claims concerning the work which was established through him. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 78: November 16, 1916 President Charles \v. Penrose was the first speaker. He bore his testimony to the fact that Joseph Smith was a prophet Of God. He dwelt upon the peace enjoyed by the true members of the Church, and then said, 'v e do not worship Joseph Smith; but we worship with him the great and holy Father, the Judge among judges. Jesus Christ anointed this prophet, Joseph Smith, and to him were given the keys of the kingdom, the keys now held by Joseph F. Smith, head of the Church. The speaker told of his first having learned of the existence of Joseph Smith, in a book written by a Frenchman, who had heard the Prophet delivering an address to some Indians. He recounted the interest which the teaching Of the founder of Mormonism created in his mind, and how he embraced the religion. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 99: July 22, 1937 My heart goes out in gratitude to all of those who have laboured upon foreign missions, and it is a real pleasure for me to be here to celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the introduction of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the British Isles, the first foreign mission ever established by the Church in this dispensation. The accomplishments of the early missionaries in Great Britain under the leadership of two members of the Council of Twelve Apostles, are a vindication of the inspiration to the Prophet Joseph when he called. Them to open up the British Mission notwithstanding the terrible trials and difficulties through which the Church was passing and the poor health of many of the saints. Undoubtedly at this particular time the Prophet needed the assistance of the Apostles as much if not more than at almost any other period in the history of the Church. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 65: October 1, 1908 This is clearly evidenced in the contending factions of to-day's Christian ity. They have the letter of the word, it is true, but they have not the key to its proper interpretation, and disunion and strife and schism are the results. The ever-varying opinions and disagreements of their learned divines come not from a lack of diligent study, or worldly wisdom on their part, for many of them are marvels in these lines. But they come from their not having the Spirit of God, or, in other-words, of revelation, to give them insight into the actual relation of things; as the Prophet Joseph said, things as they were, as they are, and as they will be. The wise thing, therefore, for them to do, is not to study deeper and more extensively into the conflicting ideas and theories of other men. Such a course can only lend mist to the fog. But it is to seek through humility and faith, as the Lord has pointed out, His Spirit which alone can lead them to an understanding and a testimony of His word. There is no other way. If a man wishes to see and enjoy the glorious shining cf the sun, he must of necessity come out into the open, unobstructed light of day and remain there as long as he wishes to see and enjoy it; and not continue to delve deeper and deeper into some earthy pit or cave.
