The Curly-Coated Retriever, commonly referred to as simply a 'Curly, ' is a breed of dog that originates from England and was originally developed to hunt upland birds and waterfowl. The Curly-Coated Retriever is the tallest of the retriever typing and is very easily distinguished due to its very unique mass of tight curls that covers the dog's body. Despite the large amount of curled hair, the Curly-Coated Retriever is actually a single coated breed and the small tight curls of a show-standard dog are actually very easy to maintain. Due to the fact that they a single coated breed, the Curly-Coated Retriever does not shed as much as most breeds. The Curly-Coated Retriever's curly coat actually repels water which allowed it to easily hunt waterfowl throughout the coldest seasons of the year. As previously mentioned the breed was developed to hunt birds but in recent years is more commonly found as a household pet or as a show dog. The only accepted coat colorations for a show standard Curly-Coated Retriever are solid black and solid liver. As a whole the Curly-Coated Retriever is a affectionate, intelligent and fun loving breed. They are known to be somewhat aloof with strangers but incredibly loyal towards their family unit. Flat-Coated Retriever is a breed of gun-dog that originates from, and was developed in, the United Kingdom. The breed was developed in the mid-19th century to be a retriever that is capable of retrieving prey both on land and in the water. The Flat-Coated Retriever is believed to be a descendant of the now extinct St. John's Water Dog which originated from North America. However it is also believed that the Flat-Coated Retriever is also related to the Canadian Newfoundland (a Collie-type dog) and the Setter. The Newfoundland blood was used to give the Flat-Coated Retriever an increased level of trainability whereas the Setter blood was used to give the Flat-Coated Retriever an enhanced ability to scent prey. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a strong muscular jaw and a relatively long muzzle which makes it extremely capable of carrying birds and upland game. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a unique head which is described as being 'of one piece, ' which means that its back-skull is a similar length to its muzzle. The Flat-Coated Retriever has dark brown, almond shaped eyes which give the breed an intelligent and friendly expression. The breed has relatively small ears that hang close the dog's head in a pendant shape. The Flat-Coated Retriever has a light body build than most other Retrievers which aids in the breed's ability to be lighter on its feet, racier and have a more elegant appearance. The Flat-Coated Retriever's coat comes in a solid black or a solid liver (brownish-red) coloration. The breed's coat is straight, moderately long and dense which allows the Flat-Coated Retriever to be protected from all types of weather conditions, water and ground cover. The breed has a lot of feather across its ears, chest, front, backs of its forelegs, underside and tail which aids in the coat's protective function. Due to the fact that it is a Retriever, the Flat-Coated Retriever is a highly intelligent and energetic breed. It is therefore important to make sure that you properly exercise your Flat-Coated Retriever (both physically and mentally) as it is likely to develop destructive behaviors due to boredom or having an abundance of energy. However the Flat-Coated Retriever is also a highly trainable and eager to please breed that excels in obedience related activities. Due to the fact that the Flat-Coated Retriever is incredibly loyal, friendly and trainable, it makes a perfect household pet as it is very easy to socialize with children, strangers and other household pets. Before purchasing any pet it is important to understand that as a pet owner you are responsible for the care and wellbeing of your pet. It is important to try and learn as much as you can about the animal you are considering to keep as a pet to make sure that your lifestyle, household and financial status are suited to provide your pet with the best possible care. The Curly-Coated Retriever is a true specialized hunting dog that can outswim, outrun, and outclass any of the sporting breeds. Prized for his mass of small crisp curls, colored in solid black or liver, the Curly-Coated Retriever is also the dog world’s best kept secret, as his devoted fans attest. Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.
Packed with full-color photographs, this fun and practical guide gives you everything you need to make your relationship with your Golden Retreiver even better. Inside, you'll find: Characteristics to look for when choosing your Golden; a list of supplies you'll need; advice on grooming, feeding, and training; a chart to keep track of important information. In addition, a bonus DVD shows you how to teach your furry friend basic commands and tricks, correct inappropriate behaviors, and understand his or her unique personality. Note: CD-ROM/DVD and other supplementary materials are not included as part of eBook file.
