Department of Agriculture in cooperation with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The collection and dissemination of agricultural statistics is the oldest activity of the United States Department of Agriculture, having had its start in 1863 during the Civil War. Recognizing the many advantages of'a joint relationship between the State and Federal Governments in the development of agricultural statistics, North Carolina, in 1919, entered into a cooperative agreement with the U.
