This collection of new music, written by composers who are or who have been performing guitarists themselves, presents intermediate to advanced concert works that explore the musical and technical diversity of the contemporary guitar. Each composer offers a unique musical and technical perspective of what the contemporary guitar is. The harmonic language ranges from jazz to atonality, the styles vary from blues to minimalism, and the cultural influences span from Eastern European to Celtic. The composers include Delpriora, Gilardino, Hudson, Johanson, Kenyon, Marron, Mearns, Ourkouzounov, Piorkowsky, and Van der Veen. The music is standard notation only.

This book presents six contemporary guitar works by Irish composers. These works are fairly evenly divided with reference to their position in the composer's output and also to the composers' age: three of the six are early works (Farrell, Bromhead and Fennessy) while the remaining three were produced during the composers' more mature years (O'Leary, Sweeney and Bodley); also, three generations of living composers are represented. the six works chosen vary widely in compositional style, approach to writing for the guitar, and technical requirements, thus presenting a generally good overview of contemporary Irish guitar music. This collection spans the period from 1970 to 2006 and includes "Gemini" by Jerome de Bromhead, the first Irish solo concert work for guitar. Born in 1956 in Moscow, guitarist Nikita Koshkin is one of Russia's leading composers, teachers and concert artists. This collection includes works from throughout his 30-year career as a composer including his three-movement Hispanic Suite, one of his earliest compositions. the other compositions included in this volume are: Pan, Tristan Playing the Lute, Romance, and a five-movement suite called the Ballads: Suite for Solo Guitar. Koshkin uses dropped-D tuning in several of these pieces and favors rhythmic variety and stylistic diversity. These intermediate to advanced compositions appear in standard notation only with suggested left-hand fingering and generous performance notes.
